i caught a beautifull large, male fisher with great color last year on my trap line. i sold him to a good friend of mine who wanted to get him mounted for his log cabin. just got to see it today. what a piece of art!!! i have never saw a more life like mount. my frind had found 2 small road kill turkeys last year and had them mounted with the fisher chasing them. looking at the mount i can just hear the fisher snarling and hissing while in hot pursuit of the turkeys!!!! what do ya think?

What do I think, LOL! Very dead turkey that's what I think! Kool mount Ken thanks for sharing it with us! :redthumb:

Your Friend,
Chuck

About 15 years ago I was sitting in a blow down near Owego NY and heard what I thought was a bobcat nailing a rabbit. Then it turned nasty! I peeked back over the tangle and saw a fisher carrying off a grey squirrel that had it's throat torn out.

Only one I ever saw. I'd hate to wake up in the woods with one of them halfway up my pantleg! (Oops, gave away my hunting technique).

Nice catch & nice mount.

Did you know that the fisher is one of the few animals that hunt and kill porcupines?

Very nice indeed!I've never came across one in the wild.I did however see a large Wolverine on Crane Mtn.near Thurman,NY.It looked kinda like a huge Badger. :redthumb:

Years ago, Massachusetts brought some in to handle the over population of porcupines.

I got woke up one moring by a murder of crows cawing like crazy. I figured they must have cornered an owl. So I went to our bathroom window which overlooks the back yard. Trying to spot the owl, I noticed movement by the compost heap. After a minute, out popped two fishers, then out popped three kits. First time I got to see a fisher, and I got to see a family of five. Deceptive in looks, they look very playful.

Am I the only one who has never even heard of a fisher? Does anyone know if the little critter exists in Texas? He is a mean lookin' little rascal isn't he. Wouldn't want to run into him in the deep woods. :shocking:

Used to see these sometimes running through the birches chaseing squirrels up in Vermont. Awesome sight.

Looks like they like the northern regions TexasMLer. Fisher cat

Thanks Swamp Rat and Musketman!

And, Musketman, don't be sorry...I'm GLAD they don't exist in Texas!
I'm just happy knowing that I will never doze off under a tree and wake up with one of those in my lap. :haha:

I have fallen asleep and woke to find myself within disemboweling-distance of a wild hog. I was a kid so I didn't have enough sense to be scared then.

fishers can be a really aggresive animal but usally shy away from people when incountered. i catch a few inmy traps every year but they are usally expired when i get there. porcupines are one of there main diets as well as squrriels. they attack porcupines head on and bite their face and throat. i have saw manny fishers with quills stuck in them. i will be selling a few this year after i get the hides tanned if anyone is interested. take care and keep yer powder dry,
Ken

Great mount Ken...thanks for posting that.

The "action" mounts make everything else "pale by comparison" as the old saying goes.
I saw something similiar at an annual, traveling Deer Hunting convention a few years ago...physically a very large scene with small trees, boulders, etc...had a full body mount like your Fisher, of a Cougar chasing/leaping after a couple of full body mount deer in full flight...

Cool! I think I saw one last winter at my place. Ran on the ice along the lake, over the dam and on downstream. I was not sure whether is was a mink or fisher or weasel. I couldn't find a good picture of a fisher, particularly one that shows its size relative to anything else. Based on your pics...I'm still not sure what it was. But nice pics.

Chickenlittle,
lets see if i can help ya figure out what ya saw.
1) fisher. 10-18 pounds average. 20-25 large. bigger than a large house cat. when running it runs in a loping gate. light or dark brown, sometimes with a patch of white.
adkfisher.jpg

2) mink. about the size of a grey squrriel. can get large as seen in this pic below with my moms boston terrior as a size example. this was a HUGE mink. pic below that is an average mink.

3) weasel. a tad smaller than a mink. same family. brown during summer. white during late fall and winter
ermine_bucket.jpg

4) otter. this might have been what you saw. larger than a fisher and torpedo in shape. dark brown as a rule but some are lighter. shown here with a large beaver for comparison. looks very much like a fisher at first glance and hard to tell if it was running and you didn't have a good look.

5) another look at an otter.

anything else i can help ya with?

That narrows it down to mink vs fisher. Based on size, I'd say it was probably a mink. I didn't have much time to look at is since it was moving right along. That and me scrambling to find my digital camera and then taking some pics that focused on the window screen instead of the critter! :(

Mt. Ken,

Where you finding otter? I wanted an otter skin side quiver in the worst way a few years back but ended up with plain leather. The state recently re-introduced several pairs upstream of where I live but I've yet to see one.

Probably just as well. Any time I've hung an animal tail from a quiver or hunting pouch it ends up being "killed" by one of the cats. :haha:

Don't trap otter's by us Stumpy! :nono: We're trying to reintroduce 'em! Adkmountainken, by the name got to be in the Adirondacks. Hmm, I want to guess Saranac Lake area. Am I close?

i live in Fulton county. Johnstown to be percise. the great Adirondack park! quite a few otter around here, just tuff for me to find time to trap them. working 2 jobs, hunting, trapping and the honey do list is hard to handle!!!! i have only caught a few rats so far this year. hope the cold weather gets the otter and fisher moving.
Stumpkiller,
tell ya what if i catch an otter this year we can work out a deal if you want. i'm allways trading my pelts away. i rarly sell my critters at auction, usally trade them among my friends for muzzloading, trapping or archery gear. i'll try to post a few pictures this weekend from my line as i trap some beautifull country. take care and keep yer powder dry,
Ken
