Hi Gulielmus! Most collectors of Mid-East type arms are interested in the blades and armour, but not the guns. I've had an interest in these guns since I was a teenager (now 63!!!). I still mostly shoot Virginia type rifles, English/French type smooth bores. But I somehow developed an interest in re-furbishing these mid-eastern guns into shooters. :idunno:
You are correct in the barrel was originally a matchlock. Which just adds to the intrigue I guess. :haha: I was originally going to have the dovetail area and vent hole welded up also. But changed my mind and opted for the brass insert on the lock to fill the gap between the barrel and pan area. That way the evidence of an original matchlock configuration is still there. Originally, there was a piece of wood and leather used to fill the gap. Imagine my surprise taking off the lock and seeing all this. :hmm: :haha:
Even though I knew that matchlocks were common on these guns, it never registered with me till fellow Forum member Julian brought it to my attention. (Thanks again Julian!). It will be fun to take it to the Range for a test fire. I can see it now....the guys saying: "OH no...another one?? :rotf: Thanks, Rick. :hatsoff:
p.s: I'll have another project to Post in about a month or less. An original Caucasian Miquelet Rifle.
