While visiting friends I found this flintlock at a yard sale. Don't really have any history on it. Bore is clean and bright, lock works and throws sparks. It came with a bunch of bird shot, cardboard disks and fiber wads not quite the diameter of a 12 gauge. The mystery is that it does not have a ram rod or a place where one would normally go. Anyway I thought I would put it out there to see if anyone would know something. There are no markings other than a "MD" on the lock where the leg of the "M" forms the back of the "D". The barrel comes out easily and is hooked fit , but no markings under it.

Thanks

This appears to be a 20 gauge single shot flintlock shotgun, perhaps for target shooting: no ram rod. It may be choked; can you put a patch down the barrel? Does it get easier as it goes down? Looks like a nice piece.

I don't notice a change. It has been well cared for as nothing is on the patch, not one speck of dirt or gunk.

Looks like owner etched initials into the lockplate; the engraving looks similar to CVA locks; lots of custom work on it, the owner must've enjoyed doing it up.

You have amateur built muzzle loader that has some dandy wood and good components. As a smooth bore it has a mix of features that suited the builder. The rifle type front sight is backwards, lock panels don’t match the lock or side plate, excess wood threw out and the lack of ram rod all point this is someone that built it with some talent but little knowledge. This is not meet to play down that it’s a nice find for you. The MD was probably the builder and the 93 maybe the year made.

I appreciate the insight! Now I'm thinking of the possibilities and changes I can make.
