I'm in the process of building an underhammer rifle using an old numrich 15/16 - 36 inch .45 cal barrel I have. I got a forestock from Deer Creek. The ramrod channel is routed into the bottom barrel channel of the forestock.
Here's the problem and my question.
When I attach the forestock to the barrel, which is pinned using two 3/32 holes drilled through the bottom flat of the barrel, I have to attach the ramrod pipes directly to the barrel. I thought about solding them to an underrib and screwing it to the barrel. But, there isn't enough wood to drill or route a ramrod channel in the forestock.
Sorry to be so long winded!! :yakyak:
How do I solder the ramrod pipes to the barrel? I worried about damaging the barrel with too much heat.

With a 15/16" .45 cal I don't think too much heat should be a problem soldering on ramrod pipes. Try to use a low temp high tin solder. I wouldn't think a propane or mapp gas torch will generate enough heat to warp or damage the barrel...loojack

Cannoneer:

You should be able to solder the thimbles to the barrel with no problems. I would tin the barrel and the thimbles first.

I wanted to thank everyone for your advise.
I picked up some low temp. silver bearing solder this afternoon. Got started on this as soon as I got home from work.
The wife wasn't happy, because dinner was getting cold. Not the first time.

I filed a small flat on the bottom of each ramrod pipe. Fluxed and tined the pipes and the area on the barrel. Used a small wood dowel to align the pipes and a "c" clamp to hold everything in place. Applied a little more hert to the barrel and I now have two ramrod pipes soldered to the barrel. It came out perfect. Thanks again.

I'd attach a photo if I knew how.

Thanks for the very descriptive explaination on how you did it. C clamps now that's too obvious. I didn't even think about that. I'll have to try this out when I get a new barrel for the underhammer.
