Barrel prices!

When I started this thread I certainly didn't mean to ruffle feathers. Sometimes I'm just out of touch. I always worked hard and made good money. I decided to pay off my house with the retirement money. I am lucky in that I can live reasonably well on SS. Not everyone can say that. But still living on a fixed income requires saving pennies and budgeting. When I see something I want I save for it little by little until I have enough . . . just enough. LOL! I thoroughly review prices on a vendors website. So anyway I had enough to buy my barrel, breech plug, four barrel lugs and the sights. So when I called the vendor to order the items, the prices were higher than listed online so I didn't get the sights. Never did well with surprises. And I'm surely not clairvoyant. I was told by Pecatonica that he has needed to update the prices online. He apologized for not doing it and all is well. They are good people as I've bought stocks from them before. Even if I was again knocking down the big bucks I would still want to know what I was looking at up front. But, I'm good. I'll get my sights & a Chambers Siler next month. I'm sure that many here live on SS (fixed income). So we do the best we can to acquire our toys. I was chastised by a member both on this forum and in private conversation having to do with being frugal and saving money. So, let's show understanding and respect for others. We all do the best we can with what we have.

I bought my first can for $1.95. Caps were $.49 per tin😳
Have a can of DuPont with the price tag still on it. $2.10.

A long time if it doesn’t get wet. I’ve used some over 75 years old that performed just as it should. Civil War era items are frequently found with powder in them that is still functional.
That's good to hear. I've got several pounds of 2f, 3f & 4f that have been sitting for 10 years. Was concerned about shelf life. I keep the cans tightly capped and they are stored in a dry place.

Budgets. Even Bill Gates has a budget.

Got my email answer from Green Mountain. There is some truth to them quitting the Muzzleloading barrel business. They are no longer going to make any below 45 cal. That’s what the sales rep said.

GM... yep. They are editing all their selections. That includes barrels for classic cartridge guns. It is a pity. I have bought about 20 barrels from them over the years. Recently I used two, now discontinued, NOS 40 cal 3/4" pistol barrels with great success. Those barrels make a dandy pistol that balances great and shoots with tack driving accuracy.

I am sure GM has accountants that tell them what is profitable. Trouble is accountants do not understand people. Thing is in a business that supplies hobby folks, the onesie-twosie sales build good customer relations and that makes for repeat customers. They should raise their prices to make everything profitable rather than deleting most of their offerings. During this lock down time the hobby sales would be brisk if they made barrels for hobby builders.

Most of their barrels are now for modern guns that do not interest me. GM has alienated me. Having a diverse selection keeps the company alive when big contracts fall through. I don't think they get that. It is a trap for some business, they expand too much in good times and when the bubble pops they go under. Given the realities of the country today, the barrels for modern guns will have no market very soon.

I plan to stop buying their barrels at any price. GM has turned their back on us hobby builders. I would rather support the one man shops that make custom barrels. Four just a few dollars more you can get a great barrel from a truly custom maker. Those guys need to be supported. GM is obviously doing fine and does not want our business.

I told them I was sorry to hear this and that I bought two barrels from them last winter and was looking at another but that probably won’t happen unless I can find the one I want NOS. The latest 8 groove barrels shot real good.

Amazing.

Who are the accountants supposed to listen to? They are held accountable by the share holders of the Corp.

The hobby builders were not buying enough barrels to sustain their business, i.e., making a profit. Thus, the accountants moved their business to more profitable barrels.

Seems to me the hobby builders are directly responsible for their loss, not the accountants.

If it was a great business, new folks would be going into it.

They seem to be doing OK financially. They are not listed a company in which you can buy stock. Shareholders are not an issue. They now concentrate on making barrels for modern guns that are likely to be banned soon. Sure seems like they "turned their backs" on us to me.

Maybe when their recent products are banned they will go back to servicing the customers that built the company?

It is easy to stop buying their barrels when they discontinue all of the barrels I am interested in buying.

Rick Sanborn is the owner and CEO of Green Mountain Rifle Barrel Co.

I guess sales of muzzleloading barrels in calibers smaller than .45 are weak and don't justify making the smaller calibers any more.
