Basspro not stocking caps

I stopped by Basspro in the Jackson area to check on some percussion caps. Not only do they not stock them, they don't stock anything for a muzzle loader anymore, nada, zip.

Seems as if it,s getting harder to find caps and other traditional supplies all over. At least at a decent price. I am primarily a cap lock shooter but am leaning toward my flintlock more and more. I've got a mold for it and a buddy who is teaching me to nap my own flints. I feel like that makes me a little less dependent on others. Still gotta buy the powder though!

its been that way here in pontotoc co. ms. for the last 20 years when it all went inline. lucky for me i was smart enough to buy enough supplies to last the rest of my life and then pass on to my kids the left overs.

They still list them on their website and I'm betting some stores still carry them.

Computers, store saver cards, store credit cards, etc. are all used to gather data. one of the things that data is used for is, determining what products a particular store carries on its shelves.
It's all about the damn bean counters trying to maximize company profits. large corporations like Bass pro will eliminate any product from their shelves if the bean counters tell them another product will generate more sales and profits.

It's all about maximizing shelf space/sales.

It's hard to guess which will be easier to find ammo for in the future, a caplock or a flinter. With a caplock you gotta find caps, but you can shoot substitute powders. With a flintlock, you have to have black powder.

The only good answer is to have both. :wink:

I have found them at Cabelas and Gander Mountain. The darned things have gotten expensive ever since the ammo shortage started several years back. Before that, you could find them for about $2 a can of 100 caps. Now, they are running about $5 a can of 100 caps. I bought 2,000 caps and 40 pounds of powder at Friendship just before we moved from Indiana. I paid $45 per thousand for the caps and $10 per pound for the powder. I am so glad that I did that.

I also picked up a bag of flints at Friendship. I don't remember just how many flints are in that bag, maybe 25 or so. Some of my rifles use 1/4 X 28 nipples, my underhammer uses 1/4 X 32 and other of my rifles use metric nipples. So, I picked up 5 of each size from one of the vendors at Friendship. I'm set for a while. :v

Yep, that's what they are here also. But at least they have them!! 100 caps is a lot of shooting once you think about it.

When a guy walks into a big box store and buys a 1000 or 10000 caps at one time it shows up on the sales report as one sale, not the ten or one hundred it should be.
If that purchase empties the store inventory no other customer can generate a sale of that product, until the supply is replenished.

Replenishing the inventory can take some time.....
The next sales report and income report will both show a reduction.

Many companies use automated inventory replenishment software..

Many companies, and marketing departments are..."sales numbers" driven.
More customers = more sales = more money.

The amount of data that stores are now collecting is staggering....and their algorithms are getting more and more sophisticated.

Yeah, I guess you're right. I used to buy gas for 29.9 cents/gal now that I think about it.

Yeah I finally bit bullet and bought 1000 #11 mag CCI caps from Jed Smith Trading today. $48 hazmat fee??? $60 for caps with fee and tax came to $102!!! Well 1000 caps should last awhile anyway??? I'm gonna vacuum seal them to protect my investment and may stockpile another 1000?

A few months back, I was at either a Bass Pro or a Cabela's, I don't remember which, :idunno: in Tulsa and I picked up a couple of cans for my grandson for $5 and change for each can. My total bill with tax was about $12.

The last ones I found here was at Walmart. End of season sale for $7.99. They said everything this year would be for inlines and that is all they have this year in muzzle loaders.

That’s what I pay for caps at my local gun shop.
I would rather buy from them then from the know nothing big box stores.

I am sure that if I wanted to buy 1000 or 5000 caps or whatever there would be no hasmat fee

The BPS in my area has a tiny section of an aisle in the back corner of the store with almost nothing in it, but if you call or go there and ask you'll be sure to get a "oh yea we sell BP stuff" response.

They haven't had caps in 6 months. Please man..

Correct. But I'm not sure about the accuracy of your next post. A sale of one is a sale of one. A sale of ten is a sale of ten. Oh, well.
However, a situation like this could spark the return of the small independant ml speciality shop.
