Bazinga!!!!!! Cracked.... What to do?

I knew I had a crack at the toe to the cheek side.

I did not know I had another that runs nearly to the wrist. Yikes!!!!!
I don’t know if this can be fixed and how?

It was coming along well
I was planning to carve beaver tails, moulding, chip carve and a flower pot.

Ohhh!

Worms running down the center of the blank are the culprit

Honestly my first thought is the trash can.
Bail now?
Tag & bag the parts for another day?
Move on to the Walnut gun?

Is it a waste of time to fix this?

I’d bail at this early stage, the work is more value then the wood.

If it was for myself, I might continue. Maybe drill and run a hardwood dowel with glue through the stock from under the buttplate return down to the stock belly or something…
If for sale or for someone else, give it up with that stock.

One option is to glue and dowel it IF you’re ok with the gun having a story. I have a cherry-stocked early New England fowler I had to patch and dowel. I call it “Peggy”.

I had the exact thought about a dowel from the butt plate end grain, diagonally. Never know it was there. Beats trashing but yes there is value in time that the OP can answer for himself.

I would try 1/4” all thread instead of a wooden dowel.

Me? Thin CA. Anything around that area will break before the CA repair.
And the wood looks to be porous so thin CA will get to where it's needed.

Crashed RC airplanes. Always bring a paper bag to pick up the parts.
CA and broken pieces put back together and back in the air in minutes. NEVER to brake in that area again!!

Thin CA will wick it's way into the broken crack area. Too much will show when a finish is applied but it damn sure won't break!! A little dab will do ya.
Threaded rod or wooden dowel will be more work but that's your choice.
If I was building or selling, I know it was REPAIRED and done well.
LOTS of stocks broken and repaired at the wrist area with a wooden dowel or all thread.

Start over fresh before putting too much into it!

Crack tend to come back in more ways than one to haunt you. One that comes to mind besides weak wood is untried oil from stain or finish that continues to migrate to the surface long after the surface has cured.
But all said I would hate to lose a nice piece of wood like that.

For me, Time to move on and put it behind me and out of mind. That piece of wood has another use, but that is unknown to me. Sorry

I’d prolly start over.. however if your determined to finish it off, I’d think about a countersunk wood screw.. then hide it with a plug and epoxy.

I'd be tempted to repair and recover but maybe not with the intent of keeping it a part of the project. Just to see what you can accomplish with a repair.

Shame to think of throwing away any work already done when with a little more work it can be made it VERY usable?
Guess history tells us none of the builders had to deal with cracks in their rifle stocks or beetle tracks??

Me? I would use it as a learning experience. I would try to see how much thin CA glue I could get down into the cracks and try to fill them from the worm hole also. Only as it was for myself. Regardless, I should learn something from doing it.

My thoughts? Worm tracks? Won't see another EXACTLY like it!!
And you know somewhere back in time, a builder ran into that, went ahead, finished it and never looked back.
That made it a "One of a Kind" and someone paid BIG $$$$ for it.

BTW, what is CA? I've learned a lot on this site about materials but am drawing a blank on the term, CA. Thanks! (I probably should know!)

Cyanoacrylate, (Super Glue!!) Comes fast or slow set, thick or thin. Gets into places you hadn't intended.
The fumes will really get to you.
The fumes are used to see/read fingerprints. by the good guys to catch the bad guys.
They make stuff to "unglue your fingers" from what you were trying to glue.
Thin CA will run into a crack and start out the other side before you can get your fingers out of the way.
They make accelerator to speed up slowing setting Super Glue that fits YOUR application.
There are ALL KINDS of Super Glue to stick ANYTHING together.
CA is the way to go.
