I have a percussion rifle i was redoing the stock and barrel. I stripped the barrel and blued it but it did not look good. I stripped it again and tried browning it. This evening I am going to try a new coat and see what happens, it just looks rusty and the rust rubs off. So I am looking for someone that does blueing or browning, I really want to have it brown. Anyone know of anyone or company that does barrels???? My email is [email protected]

When you have the brown as dark as you want rub the barrel with oil to stop the rust. You may have to do this a couple of times to stop the rusting. Browning and blueing are controled rusting.

A baking soda solution or household ammonia will stop the rust process. Card the barrel during the process as you keep the applications up until the desired color is achieved. Then it will be time to stop the rust process with the soda solution. A couple of applications may be necessary. Then start with the oil rub, per Des52, and that should work.
What sort of browning solution are you using? I like LM Forge, but you have to be careful with its use, and follow directions closely.

Doesn't the blueing and browing solution have direction on the containers? Follow them they have already been tested and found to work! Been there done that many times!

And another tip for browning. Once you have gotten to the oiling stage, oil it well and let it "age" for a good week. That gives the browning time to set in. After aging, I wash the oil off and rub it down with denim. Then I apply paste wax and buff out when dry. From then on I treat it like any other barrel.
This time of year (summertime) is the best time of the year to be browning a barrel. I have made a rack to hold a barrel with a pin the muzzle and a stand to hold the breech. I put the barrel in my mini-van and its like having a 160 degree F oven. In two days of applying the browning solution, carding and reapplying I have a very nearly black/brown finish on the metal parts.
