It is a known fact and I have seen it many times over the years. That a white tail's buck's neck will swell during the rut. However, I have not seen,read,or heard as to actually what happens to result in this swelling.
Yes, I know it is the rut but does anyone know exactly what it is do to.
No guessing or speculation just the facts if they exist.

to build up there neck muscles fer the rut and when they battle other buck and to add to there apperence like there rack....thats what i was told by a deer bioligist i knew in N.J.......bob

It is triggered by the increase in testostrone(sp). Just as the does genitalia, became inflamed during estrus, a bucks neck also increses in size. Remember, it is the doe that choses who she mates with, so if this is a real attractive feature to her, this maybe this bucks lucky day.
