So half the barrel in stock at breach down to1/3 the barre at the muzzle.
correct ,roughly sorta close.
Actually ..... Its like this ... When slabbing off the top before barrel bedding ... Measure eight of breech , its 1" . Now , mark half that 1/2" at breech and at muzzle , thats yout center line . When barrel is flush with wood and breech and muzzle is half way down , they ate centered and barrel is bedded. Later , near end the top is sanded down a bit to show a bit more at the Muzzle end , actually is a slow taper , but just a bit ....

Ok ...after barrel in bedded I usually inlet the breech plug but not today ....it doesnt really matter which order but today I wanted to see some progress , gets my spirits up to see accomplished work so I started this stuff ....first I found thickness of bolster , marked borders of lock length and marked stock , marked bolster width along barrel on stock at position .... then slabbed off extra wood on lock side of stock , from lock forward , whole length.... then using Hershel House depth gauge marked my barrel depth and my proposed web , and ramrod positions on the freshly cut side ....

Mark your forearm length , mark all your barrel , web and ramrod positions , then slab off the wood on the bottom , where Ramrod will be half exposed under barrel .... I make an angle at the entry hole not a 90 degree cut ....as per original ....

Once bottom is slabbed off , try to o cut straight ! and don't leave web too thick ... Then find center at entry hole and at muzzle ...make sure . Mark them then straight line between the marks . Chisel out your ramrod channel to 3/16" deep or close then clean up channel with sandpaper around a dowl rod back and forth to remove all marks and even it all up ....

Ok ...mark end of your barrel on wood , lay your long crooked 3/8" drill bit on stock flute at mark then tape on bit at muzzle end of bent bit . I hats where you stop drilling . Start the entry hole with small gouge then slowly use long bit . I lift up ever so slightly on still when starting . Through out the drilling process use a block , as pictured , to hold down on drill about 5-7 inches away from entry hole . When drilling only take a little then remove bit and clean flutes . I his is my 60 th gun and I still go too fast , push too hard ...go slow ! Use feeling hole in barrel channel to check depth . My first hole showed bit going down , BAD ...so lifted up drill and bit for next 3 feeler holes , took it back to right on the money . Bit was lifted maybe an inch above wood channel . The last two holes showed bit went a little up toward barrel but that is no matter , it didn't go up too much , not into barrel channel , etc and . The web is present where front bolt goes , that is always my worry . Ramrod channel and hole through forestock is done !

Do you slab off the whole length a little thicker than bolster thickness, and your feeler holes for the ram rod hole you put about 4” apart from entry hole to breach face which is end of the hole.

The feeler holes , same size as holes for lug pins , finish nails ...and no regular space is necessary ...I usual drill about four and just wing it , just kinda space em.out evenly ... Its great to kerp track of that darn drill bit . make sure it dont go down ... When slabbing off the side , lock side ... The measurement was like .300 and something ...I used the calipers and uped it a tad to .400 and scribed it the length of the lock along the barrel , then used ruler to extend that line the length of the lock , already marked and a bit extra .... Now , down the barrel , lock forward its just haphazard no measurement needed ....I just used marker , about same distance as lock mark , and took it to the Muzzle ....when cutting I just keep saw blade out side of that marker line , when at lock mark I do try to be a bit more straight and accurate , just on outside of the line .... it leaves a tad extra ....take that extra off later ...
