I couldn't stand the factory finish on the stock of my Cabela's Blue Ridge flintlock. It looked like brown paint. Loved everything else about it so I removed the original finish. After sanding I hand rubbed on multiple coats of tung oil. Now you can see the figure and grain of the walnut. Took some pics and I hope they come through.

Nice gun- beautiful shape- I like them plain like that myself.
Picking up a Pedersoli Penn flintlock tomorrow-nice plain finish too

Wow, what a difference you made, I can't understand why they would want to hide the grain underneath nasty brown stain...

I did pretty much the same thing with my Spanish Hawken. The factory finish was some real thick clear coat which had gotten scratched up by it's previous owner......looked like the surface of a scraped up gym floor!!!

Thanks to some forum members, they reccomended "Klean-strip" I sprayed some of that on and that ugly finish literally melted right off!
Revealed some pretty nice walnut underneath!

Pedersoli and InvestArms sneaks in some substandard-looking stocks on occasion. Even the Cabelas Hawkens version has some butt-ugly stocks once in a while.

Yours is gorgeous now. Nice job!

Odd how people like walnut to be finished. You guys like it natural, and I like it stained. That's what makes the world go 'round! :haha:

Mike,
Nice looking finish on your rifle stock. I like a little darker look on walnut too. I saw Jack's rifle before he re-finished it. Not sure what type of finish it was. :hmm: Didn't look like just a dark stain. It completely hid the wood and it came off like sanding paint. I'm thinkin the color was in the finish and not under it.

I like my walnut dark. My trade gun had naturally dark walnut so no stain. My Jackie Brown canoe gun is walnut and stained dark. I like them both. I don't like light walnut though.

Well done,Fat Jack!I did the same w/ mine only I used boiled linseed oil ad coal oil, same results. Why would they put such lovely wood on a gun then cover it w/ that right awful finish,I wonder?Best regards,J.A.

Jack, nice job! The grain really stands out nicely. Tung oil always has such a warm glow to it.
