Calling small game hunters

3setters.......The Pup steals the show. Gotta love him.......................As far as hunting small game in the north woods of Pa. , my favorite gun is my .40 cal. loaded down to the lower load for a .40 , somewhere around 20 + Gr. FFFG..............Next season , I should have a ...............555 cal. smooth long rifle w/shot for small game. Should be a new experience. .........oldwood

I love squirrel hunting with black powder. I've been using my Kibler SMR 45 cal for the last two years. Before that i used a caplock 45 cal.

Who actually is regularly hunting small game with BP? What is your gun of choice? Pictures would be great! I’ve got a .32 Cherokee I’m planning on putting to use this year. I thought about going with a smooth bore shotgun but I already have the .32.

As a matter of fact next week I will be out after squirrel and rabbit. This week is Primitive Hunting Season and I'm after deer with my rifle.

I use my Loyalist Arms LLC Trade gun.
I like 80 grains of 3Fg, and an ounce of #6 shot from a .62 bore. I used paper for the wadding. The trade gun is "red" because it's a painted stock as they were often, and brick red oil based paint was one of the popular colors, so that's what I chose. I'm waaaay tooo close to other farms where I take squirrels and rabbits to shoot upwards at a squirrel with a round ball...., too much chance of it coming down 'out of safe' as they say. With horse boarding businesses to the East and to the West of me... I won't take the chance of damaging such fine animals, eh?

wish we had squirels big enough to hunt, ones around here are just a smidge bigger than a chipmunk

they say there are rabbits around here....but I never seen one

only small game I have shot was a skunk in a trap, was expecting to find a racoon in that trap and it was a skunk...he skunked me as I raised my rifle to shoot him....that was a fiasco of a morning let me tell you

Wish I could contribute here... Thus far my only flintlocks are in .54 (rifle, pistol), and I don't hunt small game with those. I've been toying with the idea of a .36 or .40 someday, but my tastes and my budget don't match up.

I've killed a lot of squirrels with a .54 Lyman Great Plains using 30gr behind a patched round ball. But ever since I got my Navy Arms 12ga double, it's been my go to muzzleloader for everything unless I was fishing the creeks then I'd pack my old 44 Remmie.

I always wanted a dog that likes to hunt. How do you get them to get over their fear of gunshots? My Bo dog hears a gunshot 2 miles away and he is running for the house to cower under his blanket.

Virtually all small game, squirrel to raccoon, have been taken with either a .32 or a .36. I have flintlock SMRs in both. Used a Crockett for years prior to getting the .32 SMR.

I’ve got a few Damascus doubles both in ML and BP cartridges. I hunt with both. I’ll get some flicks shortly.

As for training to ignore the shooting. I started her as a pup tapping a spoon on a pot while feeding. Then the wife banging a spoon while playing with her. Taking her a half mile from a gun range and slowly walking her up while playing with her. I’m happy it worked for me.
