Man that’s a long piece of wood with out the barrel and lock and all the other stuff. But she sure is gonna be pretty when she gets her makeup on
😉👍.

Scraping is another option ( but you knew that already) 🙂

I have tried both sanding and scraping, but to me, sanding just looks and feels better. At least on walnut. I know that people say they can see the scrape marks on original guns, and that seems to be a plus for them, but I guess I have seen too many modern guns with a perfect finish and that just looks better to me. That being said, I use a scrape to remove the wood and sandpaper to finish it.

Ive experimented a little with scraping but still too chicken to do I exclusively .I have seen the scrape marks on originals .... I would certainly say modern trade guns have a much superior finish on them than the originals . Ive seen a bunch of originals with nice smooth finish but if you notice the carving at the mortices are barely there ...that smoothness is from 200 years or handling and rubbing down . I saw an original Fusil de Chasse , and as mentioned before , you could still see the rasp marks and what I would guess would be the scraper marks under the shellac...

Got all the shellac coats on there I want , just has to cure/ dry completely now . Might take a minute , bit humid . Those last coats dried real slow ....

There is a pair of pistols on display at Fort Ligonier which were presented to Geroge Washington by LaFayette. They are in a glass case and, from the looks of them, they have not been handled a lot. They have the standard French carving behind the barrel tang and it seems to be a lot like other 18 century guns which are in reasonably good condition. They probably representative of what 18th century carving would have looked like. Also, there are places on the wood which seem to be "aged" and look like they are dark. This has to have been done when the guns were built. It is an interesting display.

Front blade on ... scrubbing stock now .
