Ok so ....bolt holes in side plate .... At both hole draw lines centered , up and down and sideways with hole as center . Do middle hole first , punch then drill , 3/16 , then bolt in middle hole ..... With lines on front hole center that sucker up and center punch ....take it all off and drill front hole ... Then bend and tweek side plate to fit centered ....
That’s going to be awesome

Working dow n the forestock ...much like when I was workin it down to the " roughed in shape " but getting it to final shape now . First do the edges , ramrod channel and barrel channel . I use this body file then a wood file BUT I dont want it to a k IFE's edge with the tools , I do that with sand paper on a block after the hand tool work . With hand tools take it to approximately .032 , barely a flat left on the edge ....barely.... do whole forestock.....gonna take awhile go slow. The work yourway back over the forearm ....thin up at barrel channel then make sure the forearm is well shaped and doesnt look different than the rest of the forestock ....make it all flow .

Much like when I'm thinning the forestock to " roughed in shape" but this is working to final shape . Edges as sharp as possible without going g through ...1/32 at the thickest ! The body file I mentioned does a good job .... Kinda like the roughing process , work RR channel edge then barrel edge then take down ridge it creates in the middle and smooth ,thin down , everything in between . then go to the other side and same thing . Took the lock and SP mortices down to final , thinner ,too . Welp ,got it all done ....she is all to final shape ...its final sanding time now .

@Rob M., regarding the amount of flat face of the mortice around the lock edges: is that your preferred appearance, or does some other measurement, proportion, or geometry of which I am ignorant determine that? Thanks! Learning a lot from your pictures.

Hi bud .... The pictures of the originals is all I go by , try to emulate . Funny ...the originals , the border is always so thin! I try to get them as thin as possible but then in my pictures later they still look thick and clumsy compared to the originals , esp. the S.P. side where I take them down to where I'm getting uncomfortably close to the side plate but then later in a picture of it it looks like I should have taken so much more off . I do try and make both mortice to similar size as well for symmetry. To many builders , esp. first time builders , leave the borders way too thick . Some originals have borders so thin you really can't even call it a border , its like they just a knife edge of wood ! Crazy ....
