Expansion is a good thing unless it can not reach the vitals. As an avid hunter I like my weapon to be able to put down game "at any angle" that it presents itself to me. And that means a possible Texas heart shot angle. This can only happen with reliable bullet penetration. Elk are big animals with big bones and these bones must be broke and penetrated to get to the vitals for a clean kill.
