The water does a fine job of dissolving the black powder residue. What the soap is needed for is to dissolve the oil residuals. Water alone seems to leave a bit of the burnt oil in the bore. Once the gun is clean, the burnt oils show up as a dark brown or rusty colored patch even after using a good rust preventative lubricant. Its easy and cheap to add a few drops of dish washing soap to the cleaning bath ad you clean both the black powder fouling and burnt oils in the barrel.

Never noticed of which you say. Plain water has always done the job for me. Perhaps the "burnt oil" is from whatever you use in the bore and as a patch lube.

I use Oxyoke 1000 Plus for the bore and as a patch lube and haven't had any "burnt oil" residue.....because it doesn't contain any oils.....Fred

I have and still do use Outers oil for storage , and have noticed the brown color. Does not seem to bother the bore or metal as much as it does me . DT

I also use W-W-Fluid when target shooting as a patch lube and when I swab between shots. When I am done for the day I run two or three wet W-W-Fluid patches down the bore before I leave the range. When I get home I clean the rifle using warm tap water with a few drops of dish soap scrub well with patches, dry, WD the bore, run a few dry patches down the bore then use a good oil on a tight patch and oil the bore. Works for me - I do check & dry swab / re-oil after 3 days  .

Just use luke warm water to clean and flush. Boiling hot water may sound like a good idea but it can cause flash rust. Avoid it. Just use warm water and make sure you dry well and spray a good gun oil down the bore and around the lock. That's always worked for me.

WELL I use hot water and laundry detergent and Murphy's Oil Soap 1to2 patches to drive then Thompson Center bore butter why the barrel is still warm
