Off topic? :idunno: Sorry, just following your lead. I guess you do owe the man an apology.

B.D., you are right. We have to ignore some who just seem to have fun different ways, especially when they don't know enough about a topic to talk about the actual subject.

Wow
O.K.
I hope someday we all get together for some good conversation around the fire.
I have my kit together except for a coat of some kind.
And that will come soon.

You would not believe how much room there is in those lead boxes, I wish I would have had that ignore option with my first and second wives

Did you ever go out to events?
I unlike others, know nothing about you.
Did You call your "Kit" a costume?
This is way off track
now back to the Cookson again
Today I am going to thread the Ram Rod for a CW .69 worm just becouse I need to clean the bore.

Most mass produced guns have crappy wood rods, so I wouldn't worry overmuch about that,it's easy enough to make a good one. The length might present a problem though. I made a steel rod for my Indian LLP in the high school machine shop. Wasn't terribly hard once I got the taper figured out. A real machinist could do it in acouple of hours tops.

Scary sounding tg, how big are those lead boxes? :shocked2:

Mike, you don't need a kit, hop on the tractor and head on out.

Yes I did 18th century from 1980 through about 2000. From Marland to colorado to minnisota to Tennnesse. I do cowboy these days.

I still have to get a new rod for mine.To clean it I was using a toggle and string and just a primitive worm that twists onto the wood rod.
I don't want to go with a metal rod as it will add a lot of wieght to that long barrel.
I was thinking of shortening the whole affair but that was the reason I bought the long thing.
Oh well keep us informed on what you do to it I could use some pointers.

I agree with everyone who beleives that we should "Buy American". Being retired because of a disability I can no longer always afford to "Buy American", and I am sure that I am not alone. Most of the time I am forced to do the best that I can with what I've got. Laffin Dog pot metal was a conglomeration of unknown metals. US Navy ships were certainly not made of pot metal. The scrap they got from them was first class steel. Let us not forget that the originals were made of wrought iron and the barrels had a welded seam the entire length. I don't know what the tensile strength of wrought iron is, but I'll bet that it is not as strong as mild steel. So in summation while we may both like a new Suburban, and you may be able to afford it, I know that in my situation I'd have trouble affording a used Kia. :stir:

This morning While fitting the new ram rod
I thought that it would be a good idea do some age work on the Metal parts.
I use Browning from TOW
First I diss-assemble the gun.
I then wipe the barrel with rubbin Alcohol
let it dry and apply the browning.
Most of the time on high polished steel you are going to get a copper look.
It is UGLY, man let me tell ya.
But dont worry, it will go away later
Let it sit for 8 hours or so
Get you some 0000 steel wool and start rubbing
If you have some rough spots already ,work some oil into the wool and get after it.
When you get the look you want with the steel wool , give it a good wipe down with an oily rag
I always grease the bottom of the barrel if I know it will not be coming apart for some time
re assemble
