I’ve had the opportunity to go to CA and cut CA walnut 2x (last was 20 years ago). We cut 9 trees the first trip and five the next, 4 years later. I still stay in contact and I’m on his good list…and I still have some fantastic pieces I cut.
No doubt in my mind the OP post is natural walnut (Claro most likely). Mother Nature has some fantastic stuff.
These Commemorative Editions have a certain higher grade and a few really good ones would not be unexpected.
Here is an original (English) percussion from 1866. I recalled the striping/curl within the figure similar in location on the butt of the OP.
