These are my custom thimbles that I made for my Transitional longrifle project.

I ground a 1/2 x 1/2" HSS tool into a flared shape, and then turned the thimbles. The grooves were cut with a custom ground parting tool.

The skirt on the entry thimble was cast from brass (alloy 316) and was soldered on to the thimble.

I took the thimbles to the mill, and machined flats on the top of each one for the tabs. The tabs are .063 thick, and are likewise soldered on.

Next will be the custom triggerguard.

They are pretty and they are also a little thicker than originals. This will make it necessary to keep the edge of the ramrod groove a little rounder and less fine than with thinner stock, because you'd be hitting the pipes when you shape the fore-end.
