I think you have too many varibles in yer head to decide what is really what you want, cause you don't know what you really want. Of course you want the perfect rifle.... but you don't know what the perfect rifle IS yet for you. :hmm:

Your best bet is to take a day & drive to Dixon's & that way you can shoulder Several styles of rifles & barrels & this way know more of what Feels right, rather than guessing at all of this stuff & ending up not liking it or wishing you had done something else.

Remember, Looks Mean Nothing if you can't shoot it or don't like it..... :shake:

Rice does make a long tapered barrel, as I have one. I have not used it yet or had it out for a while, but I know it is at least 42" and may be a 44" barrel, .45 cal & it is a 15/16" to 7/8 or a 7/8" to 3/4". I think it is the last one but don't know for sure.
Most likely special order, as I think they made it for someone & they never came back for it or something like that, but I bought it from Rice.Don't remember if it is straight cut or round bottom rifled.

Here's a 1" ATF .54 cal x 42" long straight-barreled rifle. Nose heavy - yes. Built by myself in '89 at an attempt to have my own custom built rifle cheaply. Made some parts myself. Total cost was $275 back then. Just wanted others to know that such a thing does exist. Its gotten a few deer with a patched .530 round ball and 90 grains black powder. Have used up to 100 grains, but I haven't found a need. Pleasant recoil, not so pleasant to hold on target for an extended period of time.

Hello
I have a Jack Garner 54cal 38" with a Dehass 1 in 72 twist barrel shoots very well, I have a Rice barrel that Jim Rice made special 34" 40 cal 1 in 14 twist tapered, 1" at the breech to 7/8 at the muzzle flintlock that i hand crafted I kind of patterned it after a sharps but i put a breech plug in and made it a flinter it is much fun it shoots a 410 gr conacal bullet, I have a 50 cal 42" getts swamped 1/16 at the breech down to 13/16 back 15/16 at the muzzle balanced very well have took many prizes the Dehass and Rice have 6 lands and groves the Getts has 8 lands and gloves and round bottoms for cleaning i would not hesitate getting any of these barrels you will be most happy with any one. I have shot Green Mountain and green river barrels also witch are very good, I hear that calerain (spell) also builds a quality barrel.
Hope that this gets to you in time to make up you mind.
