I went to the range today and tried some hornets nest round ball gave me.I was impressed how good it worked.I also used ballistol for the first time.I could not believe it smelled so bad.Is it normal?.squib

It does have a unique smell to it, but I don't mind it all that much.

That is the smell of Ballistol. It just ain't never going to be Channell perfume. I use it and I love it but when I make my Beeswax and Ballistol bullet and patch lube, I make sure that everything is done in the garage with the doors open. I made it the house once and I emphesize ONCE. Mama has not let me forget that little mistake.

Yeah, it smells but it is good enough that I overlook the smell.

Ballistol never stinks. Neither does burned black powder.

The day after deer season... now THAT stinks.

To me, Ballistol sticks to high heaven. I can't even have it in the house. My shop always stinks of it though, because I use it for so many different things. It's also my patch lube of choice.

That is a very good one. Many thanks for letting me laugh out loud. :v :surrender:

It does have a unique smell to it, but so does my ex-wife. :rotf: I did have two cans of the stuff until my kids found out that it works great for their bicycle chains.

Ballistol is undoubtedly one of the best Wife or Girlfriend repellents on the market today!
You hear them coming towards the gun room, in a flash just grab a can of the Ballistol aerosol & spray it in a upside down U in the doorway.......... I guarantee they will maybe make it to the door, immediately shout a nasty remark & hastily make a hearty retreat !! :rotf: :rotf: The stuff is AWESOME !! Works just as good as skunk scent, but it doesn't run the dog away !! :)

:v Amen, it sure does stink---iso-butanol and other derivatives in Ballistol contribute to that famous smell---thank God they didn't use Butyric acid-- :barf: --now there's a smell. My cat likes it, but cats like stinky things-- :shake: --what do they know? I've used it for general purpose BP cleaner, but I have never been sold on it completely---there are as many BP cleaners and patch lubes out there and each one is a legend in it's own mind. :surrender: (Ex Chem Prof)

My daughter hates the smell. Seems like a good way to keep her out of my shop.... Oh, and the cat doesn't like it either.

Sure was a bust as a rust preventative. Didn't know anyone I was mad at enough to give it to them. Glad to know there is a use for the stuff. May even try as a cleaner now.

I have heard a few people say this but I have had good luck using it for rust prevention. It may be the dry climate here or because I really slather it on but I have used it for years and still have bright, shiney bores.

For long term storage I would use something different but for my rifles that I use a lot, Ballistol has worked just fine.

To jump back to the topic, yes it always smells like the cat peed on a warm radiator.

I'm getting to LOVE the smell of Ballistol  !

But then again, I've been averaging 6+ pounds of powdah per year thru my flint smoothbore since I bought her from Mario 3-years ago now ...
