Yes, sez it all.
But, fact is, if ye want a Bess you will be shooting a Bess. That is the fun in this game. We are individuals and there is no rule that says our choices have to make sense. (safety issues excepted) It is long, heavy and the lock is slow. So ding-dong what? It is a Bess, it is wat it is. There are downsides. Mine is too long for the gun safe and since my shoulder injury/surgery it is now a wall hanger. :(

In one of the magazines about muzzleloading hunting which used to show up in the drug store racks from time to time, one of the writers would occasionally relate his experiences with wingshooting using a Brown Bess. He had a cut-off version which he said handled better as a shotgun, and he seemed to have had a good bit of success on wildfowl. I can't recall the writer's name though.

it can be done. just work up a good patterning load, FOLLOW THROUGH and PRACTICE. lifting weights might help too. have fun!

 Just finished a Bess carbine kit up.
That's number two .
the first one works good as a shotgun.
My brother's gun
He hunts ducks and pheasants with it.
Uses 80 gr. ffg and same measure of 5 shot for birds
That's why I took this one as payment for a job.
I will also hunt turkeys with mine .

No one seems to have mentioned the long barrel. I bought a 20-gauge tulle with a 44-inch barrel. In the kind of cover preferred by grouse and woodcock, a barrel that long is very hard to swing past a bird. Fun, though, but the birds have been pitching a shutout against me so far. graybeard
