I know of a trad archery site that's not nearly as nice.

Yeah. I can name it without guessing. That's a real shame. too. I use that one as a model of what to avoid here. "How 'bout them Black Widder Bows? Are they still being made?" Haven't visited it in a year or more.

I understand I'm missing my whole life by not trying the Swiss Powder. By all accounts, it is far and away the best on all scores, though it is 2X as pricy as Goex. If only I'd been born rich instead of good lookin.

Yeah, me too!

And the proper thread would be: "Are black Widder Bows worth the money?"

 :huh:This is interresting subject on trad bows. Agree that some sites are $#@%$#. If you think that a web site is bad, one only has to shoot at some of the top trad shoots, boy what #@$%# goes on. One reason that I gave up shooting compation at world class, to much #$@#$%$. As some of us know there are always the experts, that is till it's time to shoot, then it seems always some problem why they can not shoot. As for Black Widow bows. yes they are still made and the price is up and away. There are lots of bowers that make find bows for a lot LESS. AS for this site, it is one great site and hope that we never have to go to some other site.

I need to do some more posting here so I can at least be a deer rifle caliber. :eek:ff:

I love this site. Been spending too much time here lately.

BTW, there is another trad archery site where no manure is allowed, its also a nice place to spend time. Very comparable to this one.

Thanks for letting me share the campfire.

heck..I've had bad batches of both. I break out the trusty cotton tube sock and clean the graphite out and shazam, works fine. I REALLY want to try the Schuetzen..and Swiss. Closest dealer here in Nebraska is about 3+ hours north. He's close to major campgrounds so it'll be a long weekend camping outing. My problem is the range is about an hour away and I can't get away too often with gas over $2. But when I shoot...I shoot A LOT to make up for it, that makes the substitutes quite unattractive...

..the burdens we must live with....

My daddy always told me the difference between being eccentric and crazy was how much money you had. :haha:

Go ahead and use it! I have used quite a few cans of elephant powder. No problems at all. It goes bang, deer falls down same as Goex. I really never noticed it being any dirtier burning in my rifles. Maybe I'm just not too fussy. BJH

I think it's come to light that there were poor quality control runs/batches of it...one batch might be OK, but many others would be like you've heard testimony here...apparently your batch was satisfactory for you

Me too I had used elephant for years until they quit making it.Then I found Scheutzen and I am sold.I had a batch of Goex once that kind of put me off.Black powder seems to vary depending on the batch, good old quality control I guess.Quality control seems to be a lost art nowdays, the dollar has taken over as the controlling factor.

I remember when Goex was less than $5 a pound. I remember when Swiss was ALLOT less too. So buy all you can legally now and enjoy it! I had a bad case of Elephant. I didn't know what to do with it. I thought about blending it with Swiss, Goex or Schuetzen. But, then I thought, "why ruin good powder!" I found a buyer for it and I hope he is as happy with his purchase, as I was to get rid of it.

A couple friends of mine here in MI whi are far more active than I, said many shotgun shooters like Elephant powder. So, I might have an avenue for someone to get some use out of it.

:hmm:Was understading that Elephant Powder is no longer manufactured per Dixon's. The only supply is what one has in stock.

:agree:Yes ,but as was stated to me, only as the their stock supply last. Elephant is no longer made! This was also told to me by PowderInc.

I'm pretty sure they had a big explosion a few years ago and said the heck with it. It's no longer being made.

Well, whatever the reason, thankfully they are no longer producing lawn fertilizer, 'er i mean powder. Now i know that we lost a source of powder which would be a bad thing if it was GOOD powder.

I heard the price of the land the factory was sitting on was more valuable than the factory (or it's product).

I still have several cans of Elephant, and I'm saving it so I will have something to shoot in my Flinters if/when I run out of Swiss.

My experiance with it says it fires more reliably than Pyrodex but it is much dirtier than any other powder.
Where Pyrodex won't work in a Flintlock, Elephant does (usually).

The chief reason Muzzleloading Forum is my favorate site, is, as many of you are finding out, you can be critical of a product or a supplier without fear of being barred.
I know of other sites where No one is Allowed to even say something a little negitive about products or how the companys warrantee them, or even how fast things are delivered from a supplier.

Some folks seem to be overly hard on some products/suppliers but from what I've seen on this site there are usually other people with positive comments about the same thing. When you add all of the comments, it gives a pretty good description to make your own judgments from.
This post on Elephant Powder is a fine example of that.

:)
