Hey guy's, I need your help again. I have my horn ready to scrimshaw, and I want to know where is a good place to buy those Exacto carving knives at? Do I go to Walmart, or Lowes, or a school supply store like Office Max or where? I don't get out much so I don't have a clue as to where to look. Your help would be appreciated. Thanks.

depending on what blade you want and how far in the boonies you are, try a scalpel from the local farm supply store. Like Tractor Supply Co. They sell scalpels for "unmanning" cattle and swine. I have used them for incising the edges of inlays. It is just a straight blade but works.

Some office supply places that sell art supplies or Art supply shops like Michaels carry exacto knife sets. There is a wood working division of Lee Valley tools that sells some really nice carving sets.

I checked out that website, and man, those carving sets aren't cheap.

Hobby Lobby is a good place to start, if you have one in your area. They've got the exacto knives and etching needles for those fine, detailed lines. Get plenty of extra blades or be preparred to do a lot of sharpening.

Good luck,
Danny.. :hatsoff:

+1 for the scalpels; also I have used (in my limited experience) carbide scribes to good advantage. Cheap too!

Exacto has a swivel bladed knife that turns when you do. Almost like drawing with a pencil. Very nice to work with. Other companies also make it.

Do a web search for EXACTO KNIVES and all types of links will appear! A good supplier is a art company called DICK BLICK. They have many different Exactor knife models and you can buy blades (No. 11) in quality.

Rick
p.s. .... I personally don't use Exacto blades anymore, but like my own homemade carbide tipped scribers!
