So what type of wadding do you use for prb and shot in the field during hot and dry months? September is the start of hunting season up here and where I live it can be quite hot and dry still. October is less of a concern as its usually damp until the snow flies in November. I have read here wasp nest is a good option and one which I can probably scrounge up. Any other options?

I use wads sometimes and wasp nest material sometimes and have seen no smoldering or smoke from them. The wads are treated with olive oil but the wasp material is untreated.

Get all those nests you can, those things sting me a couple of times a year and I am tired of it.

Any fibery stuff like tow or hemp fibers or pulled woolen thread I treat with lard or mink oil.Its not exposed to the heat long enough to melt the lube and catch a spark.

For my 28 ga. smoothie, I bought a ¼” sisal rope. Cut to 1 ¼” lengths, pulled apart and stuffed down the gun; it makes a good traditional wadding. However for most of my shooting I buy the standard 28 ga. fiber cushion wads with a PRB. I use both lubed and dry wads.

I have not had a problem with smoldering with either. The sisal will scorch but the fiber disintegrates once out the barrel.
