This weekend, I installed the ram rod guides, entry pipe, started shaping the fore stock, and started on the muzzle cap. Many thanks to those who have offered advice and guidance so far. Here's where we are at!

The guides and entry pipe were much more difficult, and took much more time than I thought they would

Without a doubt, my favorite stock shaping tool...the Lie Nielson #19 low angle block plane. It's the cat's meow.....

The beginning of the muzzle cap mortise. This thing takes a LOT of time!!

I get giddy like a little school girl, and every now and then I put the whole gun together just to stare at it  In my estimation (which is normally wrong), I'm about 90% complete with the rough work on the stock. The side panels need a lot of work, the tang needs a bit more shaping, and the cheek piece need some love. I am also going to make a new side plate since this one points up hill, which is why I have not inlaid it yet.

Tonight we play with the muzzle cap!

Thanks!!

You're doing an excellent job w/ one exception. There's a long flat on top the wrist behind the breech......many inexperienced builders do this and possibly don't know how to start the wrist slope somewhat into the bbl or at the breech end. I know I didn't know how to achieve a "properly" sloped wrist at first.

First off, get rid of the large radius where the tang joins the bolster and replace w/ a 1/32" radius. I also shorten the bolster front to back so that there's still enough for a wrench when screwing it in. A tang thickness of 1/8" is plenty.....although mine usually are thicker towards the rear.

If the wrist slope starts somewhat forward of the breech end of the bbl, the angled bbl flats look "funny", but this is corrected by faking in the angled flats so that the top flat is uniform and nobody will know the difference.

Again....nice work......Fred

You're doing some good, clean looking work! I'm enjoying watching a build from a blank.

Looks great! Your muzzle cap looks great, work is clean. You bench is clean too? Wish mine was!

Sitting over here in Brussels, I noticed you have a long section of wood in the bbl slot, where the plane is resting. Is that a home made scraper? or sanding block?

Hi Beaver T,

It's just a movable wooden support I made to reinforce the stock while I sand near the edges. I just slide it up and down the channel as needed.
