Stink is in the nose of the beholder.

Zonie...Look at the test I posted in the Ballistol thread. How can I believe that someone gets rust after looking at that test. Especially, since i've never gotten any in years of using it. As have so many of others.

I have to believe that someone who gets rust is doing something wrong. I don't know what, but it has to be something.

Yes, I do have a way with words. I'm very blunt when I have strong feelings about something. If i'm proven wrong, i'm man enough to admit it.

Deja Vu.... :hmm:

Have you or anyone else tried Hoppes #9?
Ned Roberts mentions using it as an alternate way to clean muzzle loader barrels in The Muzzle Loading Caplock Rifle book on page 180-181.
Just wondering if it is the same formula, the book was written in the mid-40's. :idunno:

In a city the size of Dallas / Ft Worth nobody carries Hoppes 9 Plus (BP solvent)

Couple of online dealers offer it but say its N/A or can be B/O

I have found Butch's Bore Shine BP solvent to be a most excellent cleaner but wouldnt expect it to be a rust preventerative and not sure if it prevents flash rust since I use warm water and soap afterwards.. but any product that tells you to use something else after cleaning is admitting as much.

I think a great many products will protect from rust IF and only IF you get all the dang water out first on a guns bore stored indoors, not in a basement or barn perhaps these fellers need a better overall rust prevention strategy :idunno:

I will give Ballistol a try I shoot my ML frequently enough I cant really call any thing "long term storage" and as to the stink? Well take a whiff of CorrosionX sometime, its not an awful stench but one that stays with ya, dont use it on the dinner table before dinner if'n ya got a wife or she might r u n n o f t :nono:

LOL! Got that right!

And when you use it in a hangar with overheat burner tube heaters, the stench will literally last for a week or better in winter weather! :shake:

Anyone ever use amonia to kill rust? Swab the barrel via patches, then dry patchs, then oil.

Ammonia is more likely to add too it than remove it.
Sweets 7.62 and other copper removers are strong ammonia and I use them for copper. I would never think of using it on rust. It is not especially desirable in a gun barrel for that matter.
I would use a penetrating oil. PB Blaster or some other name brand and steel wool. I have gone as far as 120 grit silicone carbide powder on a tight oiled patch and this worked well.
If its really rusty it will need to be lapped or replaced.
