Pull the lock 1st /clean /lube reinstall not over tightening lock bolt ,make sure moving parts are not making contact with wood anywhere . You did not mention lock maker (quality or other ) but imports could be using a cheaper part than a name maker (custom supplier) ,but yup you might need another spring if available/or lock /Ed

Sorry, it is a Chambers English Gentleman Sporting rifle. It was made for me by a gentleman recommended by them. I forgot the name. It seems to start doing these randomly even after being clean and with no powder in the pan.
Could also be the flint is too short or angled downward and striking very low on the frizzen. Have you tried a couple different flints?
Are you oiling or greasing the frizzen spring contact area and screw? Does the frizzen snap open when slowly pushed open by hand?

I agree the first place I’d look is the flint too long? If it’s hitting more than 2/3 up frizzen it needs shortening or changing the bevel by turning the flint over.
If nothing else works call Jim Chambers. Great guy and one way or another he will put the lock in shape.

I have one that does this sometimes. I can knap the flint in situ and it will go back to working.
Definitely make sure your flints are the correct size. Better to be a bit smaller than a bit larger.

Dear Nemo Yes a new spring would seem to be a good idea or the 'Hammer' in this case what most call a frizzen might be awfully soft and need re heat treating.

Yes agree Jim Chambers is the Emperor of lock mechanics He & Davis & the L&R I knew If ime 24 years since I was buying & useing any ones newer locks since I bought so many years ago .

Dear Deer stalker .Yes it seems we all are beng bothered by the xxxx nonsense . There is a name for the cylindrical slip that holds a rounded sharpening stone its called a . Well begins with C & ends with T but its a correct term if not much used in its proper context but MUCH used in a vulgar context on building sites and other similar places . However I may be ruffling someone's feathers so Ile desist .
