Recently purchased a Pedersoli French AN IX pistol. I know these were typically "horse" pistols and would have been in a holster or scabbard across the pommel or something but how would have a mountain man/trapper carried a pistol on his person? Just tucked in a belt or sash? Or did they make or have leather holsters? I searched the forum with little luck. Thank you for any insight.

Dunno for sure but my limited knowledge says a belt clip..
I think both. Normally I'd say they were in holsters strung over the pommel. I say this because it would be cumbersome to set traps in a stream with a pair of pistols stuck in a belt/sash. If trouble was an issue and you were on foot, then as a precaution- tuck into belt/sash.

I have seen a very plain open top leather holster that Dixie Gun Works sells for single shot pistols and was considering buying that, just didn't know if that was hc/pc? The holster or belt clip just seem a lot more convenient and stable that just stuffed in a belt or sash.

YEARS ago I bought a soft leather holster for a mnt pistol from Cabelas. Would work. I do mean SOFT though. You could do a search. I believe I still have it somewhere.

They do say to use a 2 1/2" belt,, that has to do with the way it hangs with the forward weight of the barrel,, a rivet or stitch in the belt loop itself can be used to help it work with a narrower belt.

A lot of today's replicas come with the belt clip but the photos I've seen of "mountain man" pistols- I myself haven't seen these clips. I think they were just stuffed under a belt.
The leather holster shown looks good. There is a holster at the Sonoma Barricks Museum in California that looks similar but I don't know how to post a photo.

Yeah I like the look of the holster linked above. The Leatherman makes high quality stuff, I have a couple of his bags. Going to order the holster and belt. I just hope it fits this pistol, because the pistol shown is a kentucky style but I think mine may be a little thicker.

BTW, a holster a little too big is far better than one too small. You can easily wet form a holster that is too big.

My advice to the OP was clearly intended to help both the OP and The Leatherman, to get a holster that would fit the OP's pistol and everyone come out happy in the end.

The only thing close to a person wearing a pistol on a belt that I know of were the engravings of Pirates like Edward Teach (Blackbeard) who carried pistols in a shoulder bandoleer of some sort.
