Getting black powder in Mexico?

My wonderful wife wants to take me to Mexico to hunt Occilated turkeys!! My preference would be to use my flintlock but getting black powder may be an issue. Does anyone have first hand knowledge hunting with black powder in Mexico?

you should be able to get on line and find the correct dept/phone number for the border crossing/customs. I have a moose hunt booked in the fall for Newfoundland and contacted the Canadian border/customs about my flintlock and blackpowder and they were a wealth of information and very helpful.

There is only one gun store in Mexico :td: . It is located in Mexico DF and is operated and staffed by the Mexicam Army. It is a very secure facility. I do not believe that they sell BP. It is best that you contact your outfitter and make arrangements with them.

Yes, you can't be the first guy ever to have these questions, so the outfitter will know, OR will know who to ask, where to get the permits, etc. The outfitter makes their money this way, and brings money into the country this way, so by far the best folks to ask.

:surrender: The cost that we paid our guide for getting arms across boarder was $350 each person. All firearms MUST HAVE SERIAL #. As we found out that if paper work is not done we found out from others crossing it took them TIME, 2 to 4 hrs.. WE spent no more than 1/2 hr. and was cleared to cross. The money was worth paying. As was noted your outfitter if used should know the procedure. Good luck :hatsoff:

:idunno: Myself, I would never head to mexico with any gun or even a spent .22 cartridge in the car. Its not likely but when "Jose" had a bad night that can make a bad couple MONTHS for you! Too many folks spend time in a mexican jail for doing NOTHING. Thats just me though....living in AZ may have made me paranoid. GOOD HUNTING if ya go.

Remember you have to cross 2 borders.....at a time when Mexico and US border relations are very strained.....

In my late naive teens I went to Mexico with my flintlock pistol, shot it out at a deserted beach. Coming back to America the US Customs agent found my pistol (which I was not hiding) and asked me if I knew guns were illegal to take into Mexico. I said I was not aware and he told me I was lucky and shouldn't do it again. I have been to Mexico quite a bit on the Far western border with Arizona and a couple times through Nogales. I have never had the Mexicans search my vehicle. Coming back, the US is usually very thorough.

Not Osceola turkey, Oscillated, only found in Yukatan Peninsula . I plan to chase Osceola too but my wife wants me to go after the exotic one. What can I say, wonderful wife!!

We are looking at 2018 season, which gives me time to figure it out. We would be flying through Mexico City not Driving. The gun itself I do not believe would be a problem with the appropriate paperwork it's getting powder once I'm there. I'll contact a few distributors and see if they can send powder across the border.

I think you will find that black powder hunting in Mexico with your own gun will be more trouble than it's worth.

The country is pretty jacked up from one end to the other outside of the resort areas.
And remember, if you even accidently run afoul of the law, you have basically no rights as we know them.

You are braver than most if you go down there AT ALL right now, in my opinion, especially for anything having to do with guns.

There are other places to hunt turkeys.
