I have been invited to shoot on a team next month at the Glenrock Winter Challenge. One of the targets is at 200 yards and has to be shot offhand or braced against a tree. Something I have never done. All I have every done is silhouettes or gongs at that range. All you have to do there is hit the thing and not worry about where you hit.
I was going to use my Santa Fe for the event. Last week I went out and did a little shooting at a large paper target at 200 yards. After some fiddling I found that a full sight and 90 grains 3F would put me close.
Yesterday a friend of mine phoned to go out get some 200 yard practice. I also wanted to try out some black tape with an hole put on my glasses to see if it would help me see my rear sight.
We put up two of the large targets an I put up an NMLRA 50 yard pistol target. The same one used at the Winter Challenge for 200 yards. I fired five shots at the large target and put them all in. I then fired three at the pistol target and got three scorers. I took one more shot offhand and put it in touching the black at 8:00. It made me feel good to be able to do that. The tape helped in that my rear sight was a lot clearer.
One of the fellows I was with wanted to shoot some 100 yard. We only had two targets one a standard large bull and the other a double buffalo. He took the large bull and I took the double. I shot mine offhand like I would in a match. The little arpeture was amazing. I could see my rear sight like I could when I was in my fourties. Wow! I managed to put all but two shots into the scoring rings with half of them in the black. I managed to wobble two flyers into the buffalo's head but I could call when they happened. Not bad for a target that is usually shot at 50 yards.
The tape with the hole made all the difference. My shooting has deteriorated over the last few years and it was all because the rear sight was so fuzzy that I wasn't getting good alignment. It looks like I will have cough up for a merit arpeture sometime this year.
