H2O2-- Never again!

Some of the Moose Milk recipes include a water soluble oil along with the Murphy's Soap and isopropyl alcohol.
Is there enough oil in those brews to protect against rust after cleaning?
Just to be safe, I finish my cleaning with a rust preventative and wipe it out of the barrel before shooting.

What experiences have others had with H2O2?

I use H2O2 regularly when cleaning my ml guns. I once posted a test I did with a hunk of ml barrel and H2O2. Nothing, meaning NOTHING happened to the barrel.
I know what industrial strength H2O2 can do to steel and it ain't pretty. :shake:
But, the stuff you get at the drug store is much weaker. It cleans gunk from crevices very well and, in my experience, is safe to use in your ml rifles.

MAP? MAP?? What the heck is that? :idunno: I must plead ignorance......and I have a lot of witnesses to support me in that claim. :rotf:

-Lads,
Has anyone tried to turn lead bars into gold? I for one have not, and that's why for the past fifty(50) plus years I have used nothing but soap 'n water! No rust, no fuss.

Good for you. For the first few years I shot black powder I did the same and I got, from time to time, a bit of rust. When I was introduced to the Miracle Cleaner, which is what it was called around here, and tried it the cleanup time was cut to about ten minutes with no rust. I will continue to use it as long as there is no corrosion although there are a lot more commercial products out there now than there were in 1968 when I first smelled bp smoke and I am sure some of them work just as well.

If the "real" formula needs alcohol to stop the peroxide from causing rust, why not simply drop the peroxide? Oxygen is a chemically active element and forms rust when combined with iron; in peroxide it's a free radical just waiting to do harm.

Why not plain water, with or without soap. Or even WW fluid as some use. They are stable and dissolve fouling; that's how one cleans a bore. There is nothing extra needed, no formulas and definitely NO steel eating chemicals.

Don't remember that I know Frank, but he seems to have stolen my picture for his opening graphic.

If you look up hydrogen peroxide, you'll find its listed as an oxidizer and corrosive.
I guess my only question is this...
Why the hell would you put it in a gun barrel that you want NEITHER corroded or oxidized?

There are SOOOOOOO many better choices out there, it just seems silly.
If you keep everything water based......you can clean it with water. So easy, so simple, so common sense.
Not sure why we always want to complicate the simple!?!?

Water has oxygen in it.....some water has a lot of dissolved oxygen in it. hydrogen peroxide has oxygen in it.

Oxygen can produce more than one reaction when It come in contact with iron. It can turn rust into magnetite which is passive and corrosion resistant.

But more importantly, oxygen reacts with potassium, nitrogen and sulfur just as easily.
Do those elemnts sound familiar?

I stopped looking when I found the miracle cleaner. After 25 years of using this stuff I will repeat as I have several times on this forum, I have had zero problems with rust, immediately after cleaning or any time later. It is not complicated, actually it is very simple!!!
