well they did come out a uniform gray.......a little bit more smoothed up...

I tumble my round balls with no media. Just the lead balls. It will removed the spru dimple them some and shine them like a new dime. I find it makes for a tighter fit and little harder to load.

LOL! You guys kill me sometimes!
But to answer the question, I've had RBs that looked like they needed a good tumble, but when loading and shooting i perceived no change in fit or function. So it's mainly a cosmetic thing. I found the best way to deal with the situation is to shoot up all the rough-looking ones and start fresh.
 
Not sure, but I don't think your balls should be in the media. At least where I come from, that could cause some other issues.
