You don't wait till a gas shortage hits to fill your tank right?
Not quite a rational comparison because I am sure most people drive and refill with much more frequency than they go through black powder, and it's not like the last US manufacturer of gas just announced they are calling it quits.

Regardless it will affect some more than others, and those who 'have' to use real BP will have to adjust to the change and possibly resort to having to buy European powder.

Pyrodex is far from garbage. Very accurate, consistent, 100fps faster than goex. Not all nipples work well with it, but it's easy enough to change your nipple for an aftermarket like the spitfire or red hot nipple.
Agreed. I’ve shot it for years in an unmentionable ML and found it to be very reliable. I’m now shooting it in a GPR and it’s behaving nicely.

Nope. Pyrodex is garbage .

There is this company...hmmm... I think they're called SCHUETZEN. Schuetzen supports our youth black powder instruction work with powder and caps. Goex wouldn't return a phone call or email. As far as I care, goex can pound sand.
Why is Pyrodex garbage? I have never had a problem with it? I have some that was bought years back that I used recently and it performed well. Maybe in your case it is more the user than the product? It is talk like this that will hurt the company. New comers to the sport might believe you and shy away from using it . I know personally that you don't know what you are talking about unless something has changed with method of production. which I doubt.

Pyrodex is hard to clean with certain barrel steels. I’ve seen more ruined bores with pyrodex than real black powder.

Oh goody, another pyrodex verses black powder row 🤗

Pyrodex and black powder both produce caustic salts on combustion.
The only known practical solvent for salt that is readily available is water. Hot is even better.
Use that with pyrodex and or BP and your barrel will be fine.
Use anything else and one is risking damage.

Remember, nothing really isolates salts or chemically neutralises them. All we can do is dilute them and wash away or in crystal form hold them in suspension. Unfortunately mineral oil based product do not absorb and hold salt in suspension. It may seem as though they do at first but after a while the salt separates from the oil, absorbs water from air and forms a micro caustic bead.
The only oils and fats that will carry a measure of salts and retain it are animal and vegetable.

How is Pyrodex/777, etc in a percussion Hawken? I've never tried it

I do have a nice modern rifle that I used to deer hunt with but has collected dust for several years. I use Pyrodex pellets with it, but it runs 209 primers. My Hawken uses the regular #11s.

Instant ignition whenever I've used it, not that I personally run Pyrodex as a main powder. That's my honest experience, I'm not the kind of person to trash something because I don't like the idea of it.

I’m not a metals guy! But I saw a cva barrel clean up fine with pyrodex, Thompson center barrels I saw were ate up with rust. After a good cleaning and oiling. If pyrodex works for you, use it!

Used Pyrodex for many years, it's a powerful and consistent powder. The cheap old CVA other kind of rifle i bought in `2000 has fired well over 3,000 rounds using mostly Pyrodex: The bore is pristine. Clean your rifle and you won't have a problem with Pyrodex.

Pyrodex works well in a properly maintained sidelock muzzleloader. A measured 100 grains of Pyrodex RS weighs 68.4 grains. You get more shots per pound. :p
