Haz Mat Shipping Charge

I just received the 2020 Master Hunting Catalog from Cabela's/Bass Pro. When looking thru the Black Powder section (of which there was very little) I noticed that they are charging a haz mat shipping fee for Pyrodex. I thought Pyrodex was not considered an explosive, like black powder, and therefore did not require a haz mat fee. Did something change, or is this just a Cabela's/Bass Pro requirement? Not that i really care, cause I only use the real thing, but I am curious as to why the change.

I just returned from one of my bi-monthly pilgrimages to Maine, with the obligatory stop at Cabelas in Scarborough. I was severely disappointed. Bass Pro has left its mark. The racks of used guns are gone; the Gun Library was a shell; the Bargain Cave had disappeared months ago; Two pounds of Mag Pro powder was the Total powder inventory; there were no .22 LR shells to be had at all; reloading components were scarce; they had not no. 11 caps out, but I saw some in a box behind the counter. the sales person did not know anything about them. I bought two tins. No one knew anything about the stock or inventory in the gun department. This was my last stop at a Cabela's. I used to drive 5 hours to Hamburg, Pa or five hours to Scarborough, Me to shop. Made it an event. Now, if I want to be disappointed with out-of-stocks and "cannot do thats" I will shop on line at Cabela's to save the gas and aggravation. No sense to drive all that way to get the same poor service I can get on line.

Yes, it is still a Hazardous Material shipping item. Nothing new.

The Haz/Mat fee and when it applies and when it doesn't is pretty much determined by the shipping company.
If they think they can make some money off of the people who buy the stuff, they will.

That's sad, but not surprising. I live about 5 minutes from a Bass Pro, and it's always disappointing. I havent been in a Cabela's in 10 years. When BP bought them out, I knew it was only a matter of time before the good parts of Cabela's were gone.

Pyrodex has always been charged a hazmat fee since the inception of the practice. Same with all smokeless, BP substitutes etc., that are not considered "explosives" like real black powder.

Check Midway for a lower hazmat fee. The last time I ordered it was about half the BP/Cabela’s fee.

Cabelas has been going downhill since BP bought them. I live in a small mountain town and have to buy everything online. I won't buy from Cabelas anymore.

Agree with Jdavis, Midway USA seems to have a lower hazmat fee and reasonable shipping.

It's my understanding that companies have to pay an annual HazMat fee, so the fee they charge is to recoup the cost. Naturally the bigger companies that move more product can charge less because they ship more.

I get my BP from Graf's and Sons. They always seemed to have the lowest Hazmat and shipping and you can buy as little as 4lbs.

While Pyrodex is a flammable; not an explosive, the distinction allows for small "neighborhood" gun shops to stock a propellant that does not require compliance with explosives storage, as does black powder. The hazmat shipping fee, as others have already pointed out, has always been there.

When I have a lack of disappointment, I go to Bass Pro here in Tampa, Fl and am always disappointed when looking for reloading Supplies. When they first opened the supplies were ample, but as of lately their supplies suck. Don’t know who is responsible for stocking, but god what a disappointment.

The BassPros in Vegas was always hit or miss. I went because there wasn't much there at that time. Seemed to have no standard for reloading supplies so you never knew what they would have.

It is a shame, what has happened to traditional all in one type sports stores. Now they sell politically correct only. That means a lot of Chinese stuff, rods, reals, lures, etc. We have to support the BP/firearms specialists because the pressure will be growing on them to sell only pc.
