How many of you use the good old roundball for hunting and in what caliber(s)? Reply only if you use it. I would like to see how many people reply so only reply once. I would like to know the caliber(s) and what you hunt. I use the 54cal for deer and next year antelope. I will use a 58cal roundball next year for elk.

I use the 32 cal for squirrels and the 45 cal for whitetails. I don't seem to have a problwm collecting meat with either gun using a roundball.

I dont hunt anymore but once upon a time when I could walk I did, Im out of the wheelchair after a bunch of years and still dont (what I do I don't call hunting) we are ate up with wild hogs, are causeng car wreaks and pets getting killed and may go after a someones kid next. I got the first about 350lber with a 62 roundy ball, thats one thing being in a wheelchair taught me "ya got all the time in the world" most the time. I shot 575 gr 451s. And not knowing better and it working so good used short maxie's in 54s and 58s no problem, like anyting I do when I switched it was a all or nothing the hogs head got a 54 (520)Hawken RB when she tryed to get up. All were out of range for me )3 to 400 yds) this mornning but in 2 1/2 hours I'll be setting up with the 50 Hawken and the rifled 62 610 ball got a 3X9 scope on that one, and always carry a H+A boot 45 underhammer in my boot's for in case of's,in case of what I got no idea. Fred :hatsoff: so thats ..62 600 and 610 , a54 that is more a small 53, and the 50 and 433 ball from the bootgun.

Fred ye figger the devils are gonna charge ye? Ye better get ready to smoke the tars on ye wheelchair if'n them hogs come arunnin'. I heard them devils can run a feller down with them 4 legs of thar's. :rotf:
I use a double PRB in my .50 for hunting.

Do you think I got enough fire power? I got treed way back when I was 11 or 12 put some 45 Govt in him and a 12 g slug really pi...him off,Im not in a wheelchair now but the limbs are to tall to jump up and grab :hmm: maybe a 12 foot ladder too :rotf: wont even start on the knife I carry out here, the word smatchet ring a bell? :shake: Fred :hatsoff: :youcrazy: I have been a while.

This is my first year with a m/l. But I will be using a 50 cal. PRB in a T/C Hawkens. Whitetail deer in New York and Pa.

.32(.310) for small game.
.45(.440) for deer
.50(.490) for dear
.54(.530) for deer
snake-eyes :hatsoff:

I have tried big bullets, little bullets and about everything they say you should stuff down the bore to take that big Whitetail, and nothing works as good as the old round ball. My wife and I use nothing but patched balls now, and we fill our tags every year with quality venison. I will not even consider a muzzleloader that will not shoot round balls.

All of my hunting, save coyotes, is done with black powder. As for round balls, pretty much the same experience here as Mr. Farmers. Tried the sabots and conicals in faster twist guns for a while, took some whitetails with them, but have settled on the round ball the last few years. For deer I hunt heavy forest land, 60 yrds is a long shot, round balls work as well as anything in these conditions.

my bb coach in school always said "do it in practice,do it in the game" every time I shoot, practice, club, vous, whatever, I use same gun ,same load as I'm going to use hunting. figure I go to at least 20 shoots a year, good practice for hunting..patched roundball only. 70 grains .015 patch .495 ball still workin on smoothbore for huntin, right now they'd have to be real close......missin something, besides the target,, but it will be ready for the season,,,now how far away the deer will be safe.... :hmm: love to get on about 65yds..that'll work here, and if they're further away, they're fun to watch...RC :winking:

I shoot round balls in .50 and .54 percussion and
.54 flint for everything from squirrels to whietail.

All I've shot for years is round ball. I used to use T/C Maxi-Hunters in the .50 percussion during regular gun season, but have switched over to round balls 100%.

.50 T/C hawken flintlock

.54 lancaster flintlock

as soon as i get back to building it.........bob

Mr. Sharp Shooter,
We are now using a .62cal RB as we felt the .54cal RB (and smaller) was a tad lite for our chosen game.
Best Wishes

All i use are rd balls in all calibers. I have taken rabbits, rockchucks, and a coyote with .32 rd balls, a few deer with .50 and .54 rd balls, and hope to take a deer this year with a .600 rd ball from my smoothbore.
