I use the round ball only. I got a bear with a .50 cal with 80 gr of 3f, several deer with the .45 cal with 70 gr. of 3f, and I hope to get an elk next week in Colorado with 100 gr of 3F in a .54 rifle. I have used the .54 for deer but prefer the .45. The round ball never let me down and I cast my own round balls.

I use .735 prb over 90gr 2f for deer in bess

i also use a caplock :shocked2: T/C 56 cal smoothbore when it is rainy for deer.

the round ball kills em dead as anything else, no matter what Jim Shockey says :blah:

Have used the .54 (.530 RB) on bear and deer, the .58 (.570 RB) on pig and deer.

RB's areall I have ever used from .40 to .72 on deer/Elk and small game/grouse50-54 is a good all round choice for deer/elk, if one matches the cal. to the game and get close, all will work out fine.

All I use is RB
40 cal for Tree Rats and Ground hogs
50 cal took a Wild Boar down
28 Ga Smoothbore for Tree Rats, Dove,Crow, and rabbit.
54 Cal for Deer
11 Ga blunderbuss as a snake gun (anything i can shove into the barrel.)

I didn't know there was any other kind of projectile for BP :rotf:
I use .54, .58, 60, .62 cals. Killed a cow elk with the .60 and used them all for deer and anything else.

Regards, Dave

I use a 50 cal Lyman GP rifle with a patched roundball for deer and coyotes. 7 years ago when I first started muzzle load hunting I used a TC Hawken with conicals. I have had better luck with the patched roundballs as far as killing effectiveness. The farthest I have had to chase a deer with a patched roundball was 100 yards, when I got to him he was already dead, shot thru both lungs at 50 yards. With a conical I have chased them anywhere from 500 yards to a 1/2 mile and they were still alive and I had to shoot them again, the conical just doesn't seem to expand and kill them as quick at least not in my experiences.

.32 PRB for squirrels

.490 patched round ball in a 1 in 48" 28" barrel. Plants deer better than the .270. I sold that centerfire.
