How many of you use the good old roundball for hunting and in what caliber(s)? Reply only if you use it. I would like to see how many people reply so only reply once. I would like to know the caliber(s) and what you hunt. I use the 54cal for deer and next year antelope. I will use a 58cal roundball next year for elk.

Glad to see that you have decided on the 58 cal. it should make a great elk shooter!

My round ballers grow from .32 to .875 diameter.

I like the big bores, but the 32 and 36 are fun to shoot also.

The hog I got about a week ago was with RB 62, thn a "end it" shot with a 53, it was getting dark and couldnt get good shot placement. The only Elk I got yrs ago was in my "use high-tec bullet" days but I was useing a 62 RB that day a one shot dropped him real quick, I was in disbelife. Fred :hatsoff:

I use a .36 cal.PRB for small game up to turkey.I will use .495 PRB for deer/hog.And hopefully, I will have the opportunity to put a .735 PRB from my Bess through a deer soon.Best regards,J.A.

.50 cal roundball, I will be having a .62 cal barrel made for the same gun, for a future elk hunt.

About all I use is roundball. Sometimes big ones (.590 in my .62 smoothbores) and sometimes lots of little ones (shot in the same smoothbores). The roundball is great, cheap, easy to cast, does the job, etc.
In fact here is a picture of an antlered doe I took in MI last season with my matchlock firing a .590 bare ball over 80 grains of powder.

Actually the wolf took one look at the hole in that doe, and decided to sneak out of there. :rotf:

.32 squirrel

.54 whitetail

Have carried a .50 for deer just haven't shot one with it yet.

.530 RB, .015 patch w/natural lube 1000, 95 gr. 2F out of a T/C Renegade. BTW, I weigh all of my charges.

Nope no wolf just my hunting buddy. She is a 7 year old Austrialian Shepard/Collie mix and is one of the best hunting dogs I ever had. She is great on squirrels, coon, grouse, and would love a chance to chase a deer (but not here, besides I prefer to wait for them). The only thing she won't hunt is ducks and geese, she doesn't like the water.
As for the hole, yeap it was rather large on the exit side. The ball went in just behind the front leg on one side and out the other side just behind the ribs. The exit hole was almost 3 inches due to part of the ball taking a chunk of rib out with it.

I use round ball in my Lyman .50 cal Trade Rifle. I hunt Whitetail in Upper Michigan where most shots are between 20 and 100 yards.

Roundballs are all I shoot from my flinters.

From squirrels with the .32, to deer/coyotes with the .50.

Good luck!

Nothing but PRB for almost all my guns.

.32 for rabbit & squirrel
.45 is my general critter gitter. Everything from squiirel to deer with her.
.54 for deer & bear.

I have a 58 that I just shoot minnies through but that because it has real shallow rifling & I cant get better then a 2ft group at 50yds with a PRB. Besides, its a caplock
