How to clean the oxidation off of round balls?

I've used old cartridges that had the lead tips oxidize,used them with no problem,how many have used the old ammo without thinking about it at all??? :hmm: :hmm: :hmm:

 

I sure did and I used to not think twice about it. I love to throw it downrange as much as the next shooter, I'm just a little more cautious with lead these days.

I have a couple of boxes of 0.490 round balls that have oxidation from storage over the last three years. Should I clean these before hunting with them and if so does anyone have any recommendations as to what to use? Does wiping them with bore butter help with storage over time.

Don't think WD-40 will work what do work is

Put them in a pop bottle pour in enough vinegar to cover them couple of inches and let them soaked over night it will clean it all off,,,, give them a few shakes before removing .

I don't like handling the heavily oxidized lead either. I store most of my cast balls in mason jars which seems to do a good job of keeping them "protected". If there gonna be on the shelf for many years, a few drops of oil in the jar swirled to coat the balls wouldn't hurt

I just pop 'em into my mouth, and suck the white stuff off. It's kinda sweet but I can't do too many as it gives me a headache.

NO DON'T DO THAT... it's the lead oxide that gives you the poisoning, and was the white pigment in the oil based paint that was poisoning kids in the '60s and 70's.... and likely before that...

Ive got balls I made in the 90s that still look like they came out of the mold.
How you store them is the factor thats left out here.

I personally wouldn't worry about it just load them and shoot them. the gun don't care if they're shiny or not.

I agree. They're going to be set upon a charge of explosive and launched at a thousand feet a second, they don't have time to "spruce up"!

If you want to get rid of the "frost on the balls", might consider running them thru a corn cob (no additive/polish) loaded tumbler THEN treat then with WD or some other oil.

If I want to pour some for storage I usually put them in a glass canning jar, and drop in a moisture absorber and oxygen absorber. The jar may seal but there hasn't been any oxidation.

I put them in a tin can and spray them with WD-40 and roll them around, white powder is gone. works for me!
