So please don't beat me up but I have a Lyman Deerstalker flinter and I love it. I also love tiger striped guns. Has anyone ever striped a deerstalker? I can't seem to find any in any searches...perhaps because it's never been done?

I did an artificial stripe on a CVA Mountain rifle. I used Potassium Permanganate to paint the stripe on. You want to make the stripes irregular spacing and width so that it doesn't look painted on. You could also do it with India Ink or dark leather dyes. Please do NOT burn it on the stock. Saw one a guy did with a blow torch really looked bad.

Definitely wouldn't burn it. I'm interested in seeing is someone had the balls to stipe a deerstalker or something similar. I don't have the balls to do so at least not at this point. Love the gun, just not sure how a gun like I'm asking about would look striped.

You can take a look at Pecatonica River online (someone please let me know if I spelled that wrong) and they will have a nice offering of custom stocks and blanks with varying levels of "curl". I believe they can also take your stock and make a copy using curly maple. Then you don't have to fake it. Nothing wrong with faking stripes as long as it turns out good. I see nothing wrong with your project. Would be nice and different.

Burning can work or rather singeing, I’ve done it by wrapping cord around the stock, preferably a rough cord, irregular spacing and just singe the wood lightly, the finish will bring out the varying tones.
BUT gently does it.

There's nothing wrong with your question. My answer is do what you want to do with your Deerstalker. Faux stripes are a fairly common addition to plain stocks and usually look quite nice.

The story I read was a gunsmith was restoring a fancy high quality flintlock pistol. Fancy burl wood , but where the burl ran out- it was continued with a painted on fake burl pattern! Go for it!

I spell Pecatonica at least 11 different ways, so don’t feel bad about it.

Find some scraps of plain maple somewhere and practice putting stripes on it. If the Deerstalker is a different wood find some like it or don't worry about it. Use a black or dark brown dye. Practice, Practice, Practice until you get what you want. No need to make a new stock when that's not what you're asking about doing.

Painted on stripes are always going to look painted on. If you want it to look natural the only way is to buy a nice piece of wood.
