1090–BLOWING DOWN THE BARREL–There will be NO blowing down the barrel of any firearm during NMLRA matches in any manner that requires placing the head in front of the muzzle. A flexible blow tube may be used at the shooter’s option, provided that the shooter’s head is not placed in front of the muzzle

There is this little issue. If a guy wants to be ejected from the range it is a good idea.
I bet you never drive over the speed limit either, Rules are rules.

That's the rule. Haven't bothered to fire a shot down there since. I used to shoot a pound of powder a day down there. No more. I picked up all my toys and now play elsewhere.

DAY-UM!
That's a lot of shooting for a frontstuffer. Light 'nuff to see until too dark to see if you figure in socializing with the other hairy people.
I like you.

On these new rifles with a reduce diameter section back there at the breech, is that a location for build up to create an ember?

Not sure what one has to do with the other. I do not put gun barrels in my mouth though.

I do follow the rules of those who are hosting and event or organization, even if I disagree. If I have an issue with the rules I do not participate or even join in the first place. I do not argue, I do not whine, I do not get defiant. Therefore I do not get kicked out or a reputation as a jerk. .

IF you want to shoot with the big boy shooters in the ML game you need to use a blow tube. It is what it is.

Yes, it could be. That is why I think requiring shooters to swab between shots is silly. IF there is an ember then in order to quench it by swabbing you have to flood the chambered breech, vent liner and/or drum. IF you do that the rifle must be cleaned and dried before the next shot. Shooters that use excessively wet patches have trouble with reliability. That creates a different hazard, a gun that has misfired.

That is absolutely incorrect. No matter
how soaked your cleaning patch is, push it down and get all of it wet. Then dry with two more patches. A misfire after that is impossible. The bore eis dry and clear as is the touch hole.

That is absolutely incorrect. One saturated cleaning patch followed by two dry patches clears the barrel and fouch hole completely. 55 plus years has proven this to me. If you say you have different results backed up by more shooting experience you are . . . untruthful.

Are all of those period correct old timers dead? Proof enough for me that's blowing down the barrel is not safe
How is it dangerous. You just fired a single shot weapon. The gun is empty. This argument gets old. Just be quiet and let people enjoy their hobby in their own ways. I don't do it but if I see someone doing it I would not say a word.

In order to positively extinguish the make believe ember you have to wet the breech passages. That means pouring liquid down the bore. I see guys actually doing this. However it is also a terrible idea.

I have charged all my revolvers using a flask since the late 60's and have NEVER experienced a premature powder discharge while loading them. I also use paper cartridges and not had any issues with them either.
I think a revolver is perfectly safe for that. It’s long guns that are the problem and only if one is rushing the next shot
Still even if insanely rare in a long gun it’s a no no

Just getting back into muzzleloading , looking at competing again as well.
In the 80s and 90s when I competed I've only seen a charge go off twice, both times it was in team speed shooting shooting clay pigeons on a wire with a board cut to finish. Both times it was for not blowing down the barrel, and charge went off when seating the ball. One guy had his ramrod from gun, never found it but burned his hand. The other guy had a palm handle ramrod and he broke his hand.
Seeing these things I alway blow down the barrel, does anyone who shoots at the,
billings rod & gun, Montana or Wyoming rondezvous,
know if they inforce the no blowing down barrel rule? Don't want to get thrown out, lol.
Thanks
Rick

You don’t put it in your mouth. You’ve been watching too much ****.

They aren’t the big boys. I don’t need a tube because I don’t care to deal with the (how’d he put it?) “pearl clutchers”… perfect term for the aunt Mary’s.

blow tubes are an absolute must when shooting straight Black Powder. When shooting these types of loads, you need to soften the fouling after each shot. You do this by gently blowing through the clear tubing end. Look for moisture in the clear tubing, and you will be able to tell whether you are getting any moisture into the barrel. With the 12" tube you will be able to keep an eye on conditions.

I agree. But (and there is always a 'BUT' 😉 ) at ranges where there is a rule against it I obey the rules. I blew down the barrel after each shot for many years and thousands of times. I agree, once you shoot yer rifle you know it is unloaded. BUT, in the heat of competition it is possible (very rare but possible) to hear someone elses rifle go off thinking is it yers. A hot load in a hot barrel and yer mouth over the muzzle could, once in a billion times, go off and remove yer haid. Overabundance of caution maybe but I changed that habit and quilt. Ain't blowed my haid off yet since then.

A "must?" Good grief. Never heard that before. Actually I've never even seen a blow tube. Is it plastic? If we want to I'm mileage our ancestors we don't use plastic anything. This thread is getting silly. To end it on the correct note, I hereby declard require that all members here never put their mouths on their muzzleloaders. Besides being illegal under federal law and enforceable by ATF, all.blowing, sucking, kissing, or licking of any black powder gun
