Thanks to all for the replies.

I tried the concoction today.

Simply put, I'm going back to plain ol' water for my cleaning. If I get a wild hair for something more exotic, I'll add a drop or two of dish soap to the mix.

The M.A.P. mixture didn't impress me.

Once again, I find the old ways are usually best.

Thanks for your kind replies, Skychief

You've come to a wise and sensible conclusion ... wiser than most.

Murphy's Oil Soap, hydrogen peroxide, and alcohol for a cleaning solution today.

People call it MAP, but 20 years ago it was what I was told was Moose Milk...though there are other recipes that are also called that. It worked great after about 35 blank rounds had been fired through a musket....but so did cheap windshield washer fluid. It also did a good job of making surface rust if one didn't rinse it out well, or rinse the lock on the musket well. Now when shooting live rounds, I don't nearly shoot that many..., so it made no difference that I could find after most other types of shooting other than a battle reenactment, though it did cost more than plain water....

I found that water takes a little while longer when used alone, and about a cup of water with a single drop of dishwashing liquid works better...., but even if you don't have the dishwashing liquid, water works fine.

The trick is getting the moisture out of the barrel when done, and some guys like to use 91% alcohol after water or soap and water and a rinse, to aid in evaporation, followed by an oil (that's how my granddad did it)..., and some like to use WD-40 to help get the moisture out.
