Looking for advice on pistol kit.

I'M new to BP shooting received a 1851 44 cal for Christmas but the bug has bitten and I want to build a pistol from a kit. Can anyone recommend which kit would be good for 1st timer and best price/place but good quality. I know I'm asking for alot. The old- I want my cake and eat it tooooo. Thanks, KT

Lyman has a pistol kit, percussion in 50 or 54 cal.

Places like Track of the Wolf sells them for about 250 bucks (click here)

If you are looking for something more challenging, I would check out Muzzleloader Builder's Supply (here).

They sell pistol stock blanks (about 100 bucks), a Derringer parts kit (160 bucks), plus barrels (about 100 bucks) - so more work and more money but you will get a "custom'ish" piece..

The Lyman pistol is an excellent pistol for a first time builder to start with.

It is basically, a factory pistol that has not had the finishing touches done but all of the difficult work (like drilling and threading holes) already exist.

These sometimes almost fall together but some require a small bit of trimming and minor woodwork to get everything installed correctly.

The more advanced kits like MBS, Pecatonica River etc. sell are little more than a roughed out wooden stock, a lock and a bunch of raw castings.

These advanced "kits" require some knowledge of doing accurate layouts, drilling and threading holes, filing and cutting metal and occasionally soldering.

These "advanced" kits are almost as much work as building a full advanced rifle.

No they are not the same, so not a drop in replacement for each other.

Dixie also has the deer creek pistol kit for $185. It is the equivalent of the cva mountain pistol. Makes a nice shooting entry level pistol

This gun started out as a Pedersoli kit. After quite a bit of carving on the stock and the addition of some parts purchased from Track of the wolf it ended up as a nice 'Kentucky'
