I built one of those last year. I knew it was a fantasy piece when I did it but I've always liked the fullstock Hawkens and wanted a flinter. What could be better?

RedFeather: Hawkens were utility rifles with subtle lines and state of the art components. They were the Weatherbys of their day. And like Weatherbys today they were not as numerous as various trade rifles. Many more intact Hawkens come down to us today than trade rifles. They were more of an investment and better taken care of than the Deringers, Henrys and Lemans that were more numerous.

You're right about carrying one around all day on foot. They were heavy and really designed for the user to have a horse. You didn't see many people walking around on foot in the Rocky Mountain west. Those without a horse many times lost their topknot or starved.

Hello Guys
Well here is my 2 cents worth. The Browning Hawken is awesome. A shooting companion of mine has one. It looks, feels, and shoots great. I think of the plains men everytime I see it shoot. I sure wish they still made those. Well there you have it guys, a loyalsit dawg's 2 cents... :hatsoff:

Browning never called their rifle a "Hawken". I believe that they called it "The Jonathan Browning Mountain Rifle". Browning had no need to pirate the Hawken name as so many other less scrupulous companies have done over the years. That said, the Browning is a fine rifle in my opinion.

I am currently looking at a 1/4 built Hawken at a gun shop. Gent wants 450 for it, all you get is a squared stock that needs to be roughed out and finished, the barrel channel has been cut and there is what looks like a > 1" barrel in it but is only a 20 cal., the barrel is pinned into the unfinished squared stock. Gun must weigh in the 15lb range.

It has great potential, big steel barrel, put on all steel furniture.

Thinking about asking him to trade for a few mil. rifles I have collecting dust.

Barrel can be drilled and rifled in any gauge I want.

Thinking hard on this one.

It comes with a siler perc. lock and a set of double set triggers.

Thinking really hard, this would be a great first build as I will have to do everything but the barrel channel.

Hmmmmm.................

I like mine! It was from TOTW the Bridger Hawken in .58 (Big .58)

Fixin to build another just like it. This next one will be identical with one exception, the barrel will be a 36x 1 1/8 instead of the 42x1 1/8.

The one I have now is for Hunting, Cross Stick Matches, Chunck Gun, and possibly the Light Bench Match.

A person could do alot worse!

Thank you I appreciate it. It is a small big bore compared to some but I can tell you it roars when it goes off.
