I do sometimes make rawhide sheaths without the leather liner. I only do them on blacksmith style blades I make.
Here are a few

I've built sheathes with a rawhide liner and horse-hide on the outside.
(What a PAIN! The wet molded rawhide shrinks quite a bit making it hard to get a good "molded fit". )

I've got an all rawhide sheath just layin' here. It's so hard that, if you can't kill someone with the knife, you can beat them to death with the sheath! :thumb:  I'm pretty sure it's hard enough to drive small nails with?
I HAD it listed with a Nessmuk, but after a 6 month lull, I pulled the listing, tossed the sheath onto my band saw table and made a new one out of plain old Veg, tanned. That one lasted a week and the whole package went to a Texan.
I've never worked with Horse Hide?

Very nice:
I can see using all rawhide on a solid steel blade/handle combination. Rawhide will tear up a wood handle something fierce. I use a lot of artificial sinew myself, for X stitching. I haven't swung a smith's hammer since the 80's. Now it's all stock removal.
Here's the all rawhide sheath I made for the Nessmuk. Still lays in my shop.
God bless:

I use epoxy and a tar /alcohol mix. I have not tried pitch but its on my list of things to try.
I use West Systems G Flex epoxy mixed with the tinniest drop of Stew Mac Tobacco brown guitar stain that I can put in it. Just the tip of a tooth pick's worth. It looks great. Gives you a nice Honey/Amber color. Almost a perfect Pine Pitch look-alike?
Just my $0.02
