To be perfectly honest, I don't think it was that big a concern for them. Game was far more prevalent and ranges shorter. They were probably more woods knowledgeable than many a modern hunter, stalked closer, etc. Lubes were natural, bores not cut as sharply and probably used smaller loads and a bit more 'windage' for the ball. Cloth had been washed in more caustic soaps and probably had a bit more loft by the time it was cut into patch strips.
