It has been quite some time, about 30 yrs or so, since I owned or shot a black powder rifle, or any firearm for that matter. I used to really enjoy black powder shooting, and owned a Thompson Center Hawken rifle. It looks like T/C no longer makes a Hawken, so I could use some recommendations as far as who makes and sells a complete Hawken rifle. Thanks in advance, Cycler.

The T/C was not actually a Hawken; they just named it a Hawken. Check out a Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken.

Welcome to the Forum. :)

Yes, TC's given up the ghost but the guns imported by Traditions are pretty good rifles and they look and handle close to the TC Hawken.

The Lyman Deerstalker, and Trade Rifle are pretty close to the TC.

Lyman's Great Plains Rifle is considered to be as good if not better than the TC Hawken but it is a bit more muzzle heavy because of its longer barrel.

The Great Plains Rifle is made for shooting patched roundballs. They also offer a similar rifle with faster twist and shallow rifling made for shooting slugs called the Great Plains Hunter.

Often these and the older CVA rifles can be found at pawn shops or gun shows for reasonable prices but, because they are used, you have to be very careful about checking out the condition of the bores. Most of them were poorly cleaned so they have rusty bores that make them pretty worthless.

Hi,
Presently at Track there is a Lyman GPR with two (2) barrels, one slow twist, the other a faster twist, for bullets, for a great price.
You could not buy the parts for their asking price.
I have no part in this transaction!
For the bargain hunter this is a bargain, and a darn nice looking rifle to boot!
It won't last long!
Fred

Thank you for your responses. As time allows I will try to check out your recommendations.

That one-of-a-kind refinished GPH currently for sale at TOW is a great bargain - if I were looking for a good Hawken look-alike, it would already be gone!

Luckily for whoever finally gets it, I am into flintlocks now....

But it really looks sharp !!!!

I own a lyman GPR in 54 cal flintlock form.

It's a good rifle.

If you do buy from track of the wolf, consider having their gunsmiths install the white lightning vent liner in it, if you intend to buy a flintlock.

Try a gun show if one comes to your area. I've picked up gently used T/C Hawkens for embarresingly low prices.

In your OP, you mention TC Hawken, so I assume you're looking for something similar. Pawn shops and LGS's get them from time to time, and depending on the shop, often sell them pretty cheap. I regularly see them for $100 to $450. It all depends on who's selling and the condition. I paid $100 for a nice shooter(TC Hawken) and I paid $300 for a like new early flintlock TC Hawken.

You asked who "makes" Hawken rifles these days"", from what you are asking is you desire a new rifle not a used rifle.

Options are limited, Pedersoli or Lyman and their quality is questionable now or a Traditions or a full blown custom rifle.

Need more definition to answer your question.

I put an add on craigs once and it worked.
But CL is a little shady about guns and weapons so I worded my wanted add in such a way as to avoid anyone but a BP shooter knowing what I wanted.

Something like this should work:
Looking for a T/C Hawken or a GPR. Must be in functional condition. Traditions or CVA might be considered for the right price and condition.

Has anyone bought something from an auction site like gunbroker and not received the gun in the condition it was described in? Any bad experiences? I'm itching for a nice Hawken style gun in .50 or .54 cal.

Have bought two, was very pleased with both. One (my 1849 pocket) appeared unfired for $149.00 and I was only bidder!. One will eventually get a bad deal though and little recourse. Make sure its sold by a reputable seller and should do well. My biggest concern is a bulged barrel.

You are correct. I was asking about current production models. Have some other matters to take care of currently, but, saving my pennies. May just go with a reputable kit, if I can find a competent gunsmith, close to me in NJ.

Understand funding, if used is on your list watch here, what you want will show up in time or try "The Gun Works", they are really nice folks.

Track Of The Wolf is an honest place to deal with and the they provide great packaging for shipping.

New Hawken's in today's making are really limited.

Thanks Azmtnman, the bulged barrel is a concern, especially if buying from someone that doesn't care or know enough to look for it. The reputable dealer approach and/or someone that is willing to offer a short inspection period might alleviate some of my concerns.

Track of the Wolf is definately on my watch list. Appreciate all the comments from all of the posters.
