I'm very proud to report that myself and the league chairman of a local club we belong to have once again "taken up arms" in an effort to obtain the rank of Expert in the NRA Muzzleloading Pistol Qualification Program.
After receiving the official go-ahead from the NRA HQ to utilize the B-6 50 Yard Slow-Fire Pistol Targets for the strong-hand only 50 Yard leg of the Match, we shot the course of fire for the first time today and BOTH of us made the grade! We each shot in the high 70's on the B-19 25 Yard Target, so we each needed 74 points or less to make the 150x200 aggregate score needed for Expert. I wound-up shooting a 161x200, just (4) points shy of the necessary aggregate for Distinguished Expert. We both were a little out of practice shooting duelist-style (strong-hand only), especially with a Colt style revolver from 50 yards away!
Since we are now shooting the 50 yard leg of the Match with the 50 yard target, we each stand a chance in finishing as Distinguished Experts next year when the program continues. Previously we were at an extreme disadvantage using the B-19 at 50 yards, due to the fact that the outside scoring ring on the B-19 has the point value of (1) single point, whereas the 50 yard target's outside ring has a (5) point value. The folks at NRA had missed the fact that all of the other disciplines that do Pistol Qualifications are allowed to switch targets when doing the 50 yard portion of the Match. Earlier this past week that was all straightened-out at NRA HQ, so we had the first Match today!
The course of fire for the Qualification is 13 shots from 25 yards on the B-19, with the best 10 counting for score, and then 13 shots at 50 yards on the B-6, with the best 10 counting for score. All 26 shots are done strong-hand only (duelist-style), so it's a real challenge!
I'd recommend this Match to any group or club that has a serious interest in getting really good with black powder hand guns. Patches, rockers, pins, and certificates for each level (Pro-Marksman through Distinguished Expert) are available through NRA HQ.
As the League progresses through the program, I'll report back to this forum with updates as needed.
Has anyone else here on the forum ever been through this program? I'd love to hear about it!
I realize that this post seems a little "ME-Centric", but we were able to correct a problem at HQ with regards to using the wrong targets at 50 yards distance, so I figured that I would pass this information on to the forum members.
Thanks for your time and input!
Dave
