Not wanting to highjack a thread about the need to ensure a snug fitting OS card/wad over a bare ball in a smoothbore, I thought I'd ask this as a separate question:
It's well established that at least some conicals, like TC maxi-hunters, are really not snug in the rifling at all, after they've been punched through the muzzle and the rifling has cut through the engraving band.
It strikes me that a snug fitting wad over a conical would probably do as well as one over a bare ball...with the heavy mass of the conical exiting the muzzle, I would imagine the wind blast would flip an OS wad out of the way without the conical even knowing it, just like it apparently does with a bare ball.
I occasionally like to use a .45cal/255grn maxi-hunter...always conscious of it being borderline loose in the bore, constantly checking it...maybe a snug fitting .50cal Oxyoke wonderwad as an "OC" wad (over conical) wad would do the trick. I already know the .45cal maxi-hunters are very accurate in my rifles...wouldn't take many shots to see if an "OC" wad was interfering with accuracy... :hmm: :hmm:
Anybody have any first hand experience trying this?
