Had an opportunity to take this guy while heading back to the truck on a deer hunt. 80gr.of 3f is way to much for squirrels, but awesome to take my first game with the flinter.

Congrats! If you shot that squirrel with a deer load, you did a good job of taking a picture and not showing the damage to some part of it that must have occurred! I've decapitated squirrels with much, much less than deer loads and with a .36.

Congratulations on a fine shot and nice photo. What caliber is your rifle and is it a GPR? I once shot a squirrel with a .50, that was on a limb looking at me, and there wasn't enough left to pick up......robin

I've taken over 75 squirrels with my .45 , and the worse of them had two legs blown off, most were just through holes and little or no meat loss.
Mind you, I use only 23 grains of FFFG.

I've taken squirrels and rabbits with my deer load..., .530 ball and 70 grains of 3Fg. Only obliterated one of the squirrels, but I was able to take my time from a good resting position to take out the heads. I also passed on some shots where I couldn't get a good view of the critter's head.

I used 70 grains of 3Fg and an ounce of #4 in each shot last week to take four squirrels...but that's with shot and at 15+ yards, so not too many pellets are hitting them...in fact I recovered only 11 pellets so that's less than 3 hitting each squirrel to do the job.

Shot a black squirrel with my TC 50 cal Pennsylvania Hunter. .490 ball and 90 gr eq pyrodex RS. Shot at about 20 yards and hit right in the head. Missed a whole deer in the same place, at the same distance, the day before. It was certainly overkill, but I got a whole squirrel to eat, anyway. Wouldn't make it a habit, but, you can do it.

If 50 cal is overkill, dunno what to call my 54, 58 and 62 cal snowshoe hunting. Tried my Bess (.730 balls), but a long string of misses inspired me to switch to shot in that one! :rotf:

Hittem in the head and it doesn't really matter what size hole in your bore. Heck. If I had a 4 gauge or a 2 gauge, I'd still be out there clanking small game with them. Absolutely no better big game practice with a gun than lugging it hither and yon through the rough stuff trying to poke holes in very small targets.
